Title: Goodbye, Tahrir Square
Sub-title: Coming of Age as a Jew of the Nile
By (author): Elio Zarmati
ISBN13: 9798887196657
"Goodbye, Tahrir Square" is a first-person memoir written from the standpoint of a Jewish boy growing up in Egypt during the watershed years that shaped the Middle East into the powder keg it is today. Described as the â Holden Caulfield of the Nileâ for his rebellious attitude, the boy witnessedâ between the ages of seven to fourteenâ the 1952 revolution that overthrew King Farouk and gave rise to the dictatorship of Gamal Abdel Nasser; the 1956 Suez war that marked the end of the British empire; and in its wake the destruction of the Jewish community that had lived in Egypt since Biblical times. Though set in times of revolution and war, "Goodbye, Tahrir Square" is not a political book. It is the story of a boy whose close-knit extended Sephardic family, full of rich traditions and colorful characters, is suddenly torn asunder by the forces of revolution and war. A man-child coming of age like a wild cactus in the rubble of the past, overcoming a hostile environment, forging friendships that transcend ethnic and religious animus, and finding his own identity as he awakens to literature, history, art, archaeology, and and the magic of love and sex.

Title: Pushkin
Sub-title: A Writer’s Biography
By (author): Yuri Lotman, Ilya Nemirovsky
ISBN13: 9798887196435
This volume presents a chronological biography of Alexander Pushkin, often held to be Russiaâ s national poet and writer. Lotman pays special attention to the development of Pushkinâ s social and political thought throughout the poetâ s life, painting a picture of the poet as having been deeply in tune with and even involved in the most pressing socio-political challenges of his age, such as the issue of constitutional monarchy and revolution through his association with various members of the Decembrist movement, the issue of serfdom, and his struggle for personal, creative, and financial freedom as a writer who was under constant public scrutiny and state surveillance. Lotman also fascinatingly describes the deliberate measures Pushkin undertook in his own life to shape the publicâ s perception of him, essentially treating his life and personal mythology as a work of art in itself.

Title: Sinâ ¢aâ ¢gogue
Sub-title: Sin and Failure in Jewish Thought
By (author): David Bashevkin
ISBN10-13: 1618117971 : 9781618117977
"A manual for living with defeat" â Tablet It is no more possible to think about religion without sin than it is to think about a garden without dirt. By its very nature, the ideals of religion entail sin and failure. Judaism has its own language and framework for sin that expresses themselves both legally and philosophically. Both legal questionsâ circumstances where sin is permissible or mandated, the role of intention and actionâ as well as philosophical questionsâ why sin occurs and how does Judaism react to religious crisisâ are considered within this volume. This book will present the concepts of sin and failure in Jewish thought, weaving together biblical and rabbinic studies to reveal a holistic portrait of the notion of sin and failure within Jewish thought. The suffix "agogue" means to lead or grow. Here as well, Sinâ ¢aâ ¢gogue: Sin and Failure in Jewish Thought will provide its readers frameworks and strategies to develop even in the face of failure.

Title: The Story of Sonechka
By (author): Marina Tsvetaeva Translated by: Inessa Fishbeyn, C. D. C. Reeve
ISBN13: 9798887198057
It is 1918 in Moscow. The communist revolution is in full swing. Food is scarce, living conditions harsh. Two women meet on the stage of an empty theater. One is the now famous twenty-six-year-old poet Maria Tsvetaeva, the other the twenty-four-year-old actress Sonia Holliday (Sonechka). The Story of Sonechka, written almost twenty years later, is a vivid account, at once comic and tragic, of their love for each other. A previously untranslated masterpiece (Dmitry Bikov calls it â one of the five best books in world literatureâ ), it stands as a testament to the artistry with which Tsvetaeva wrote prose; the vicissitudes of her life, love, and work; and the intense dynamics of Moscow culture in the wake of the Revolution. It also constitutes an exceedingly rare and early example of queer prose literature originally written in Russian.
