| The role of Austria-Hungary and especially that of Emperor Karl in World War I has so far been misrepresented by research. So one followed the portrayal of ex-Empress Zita, most recently in the beatification process for her husband, who claimed that Germany had started the unrestricted submarine war without the consent of Austria-Hungary. Georg Stacher shows in his book, however, that Emperor Karl was personally in favor of the submarine war. This was followed by the US declaration of war on Germany. In order to free Austria-Hungary from its alliance with Germany, France offered Emperor Karl a separate peace through Prince Sixtus, the brother of Empress Zita: Emperor Karl was with the conditions (especially the cession of Alsace-Lorraine to France), without Germany Having consulted, quickly agreed. |
