| To get an idea of the future of book-based education under digital conditions, its relationship to digital technology needs to be clarified. This is made possible by a simple maneuver: you have to look at the contents, approaches and formats of the pre-digital period of education technically, but the techniques of the digital present have a cultural history. The request to examine the content of the new digital network technology seems absurd at first, because this technology derives its legitimation entirely from the overwhelming power of its effective functioning. So why take this step back? It is necessary because "education" is at stake in an identity-building tradition that still supports institutions and individuals. If we do not follow this tradition in a plausible way, it will become more and more inevitable to declare permanent technical innovation and increased effectiveness as the only program item in education. Last but not least, the book wants to answer the question, historically and technically differentiated, of what constitutes media education. |
