| In this highly interesting and vividly written book, Colonel (ret.) Dr Jacques Neriah takes us back to the Jewish history of his original homeland - Lebanon. The author, a special analyst for the Middle East at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, former foreign policy adviser to Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and deputy head of assessment for Israeli military intelligence, is one of his country's best-known "public intellectuals". In the midst of today's hostilities, after the terrible Hamas pogrom of 7 October 2023, the wailing of sirens because of Hezbollah rockets, Colonel Neriah writes the story of the Jewish community in which he was born in February 1951, the Jewish community of Lebanon. This book is a search for the roots of one of the leading figures of Israeli security. Neriah writes this book not in a seemingly idyllic paradise like his home country of Austria, but in the State of Israel, whose existence is under threat as never before since its founding in 1948. Except for the excellent study by Salameh (2019), the fate of the Jewish community in Lebanon is barely on the 'radar screen' of international social science and historiography. In his book, Neriah paints a picture of the small Jewish community in the land of the Lebanese mountains, the major political disasters that have befallen the former Switzerland of the Middle East, through to the rise of Hezbollah and its destructive and terrifying military power, remotely controlled by Iran. |
