Title: A Lullaby in the Desert
By (author): Mozhe Azar
ISBN10-13: 1912092816 : 9781912092819
A Lullaby in the Desert tells the story of one womanâ s unrelenting journey to find freedom. Born in Iran, Susan is forced to flee in order to escape an arranged marriage, leaving her mother and everything she has known behind. Years later, Susan has settled in Erbil where she must continue to navigate the daily threat of racial prejudice and a violent patriarchal society. Yet even as she struggles to survive, life is further disturbed by the approach of ISIS in 2014. Like many others, Susan is forced to make a life changing decision. Stay in Erbil and let ISIS decide her fate? Or risk everything in search of a freedom she had never known? The subjection and danger that Susan must overcome during her gruelling journey shows an instinct for survival and human resilience that is truly eye opening. A Lullaby in the Desert may share one womanâ s fight for survival, but it shows the reality that many have, and still, face.

"This book is fairly well-written, with strong prose and interesting characters. It’s not a light read. it’s a disturbing, harrowing read. An eye-opening one. That’s kinda the point." -- Pages and Paws

Title: A Requiem for Biscuit Town
By (author): Amanda Walsh
ISBN10-13: 1911740083 : 9781911740087
A Requiem for Biscuit Town is a raw and resonant poetry collection about grief, identity, and survival. Told through the lens of working-class life, it moves through the five stages of grief â denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance â capturing the heartbreak and resilience of lives shaped by struggle. These poems donâ t just ask you to reflect, they ask you to feel. Unflinching and compassionate, this collection is both a reckoning and a refuge, a place where loss is laid bare, where class and mental health arenâ t footnotes, and where healing doesnâ t follow a straight line. Read it front to back, or jump in where it hurts the most. Either way, this isnâ t just poetry. Itâ s survival in verse.

Title: An Irish Childhood
By (author): Mary McCann
ISBN10-13: 1912092565 : 9781912092567
Mary McCann was born in the 1920s into the harsh and deprived countryside life of Northern Ireland. Growing up, she took care of her siblings, wearing clothes that her mother made out of flour sacks. School life was harsh and illness and deprivation were constant threats. Mary adored her hard-working father but felt distant from her mother, with whom she nursed neighbours through diseases that swept through the community. Mary endured many trials and tribulations in her large family before she found her way to London, England and the start of a new life. She had a family of her own but members of the family back home followed her, not always happily. This is a story that will make you laugh and cry -- an important historical account of life in Northern Ireland at the beginning of the twentieth century.

"I was charmed by the gentle flow and the detail of how life was back then. There are not the cliff hangers of a fictional book because this is the story of someone’s actual life! The description of the process the writer's mother used to make clothes out of potato sacks was so interesting and the fact that they went to school in shoes only in the winter months. If you are looking for a whodunnit or saucy romp then this will not be for you, but if people's actual lives interest you then you will love this interesting account of life lived in Ireland and England back in the day. Highly recommend.” -- paddypaws, Amazon UK

"An incredible insight into Northern Irish life in the early 20th Century, Mary Mccann's book describes communities before cars, electricity and the expectations we know of today. From the traditional Irish ceilidhs of rural villages and growth of the IRA, to poverty and illness, this rich depiction of Mary Mccann's experiences is one that will inspire and inform - shedding a light on a time that is no less relevant now as it was then." -- James Stewart, Constant Star review

"There is so much I loved. I read it in terms of transitions- from day to night, collective to individual, innocence to experience, from the real to the spiritual/liminal- and what I like about the ending is that it makes this idea of transitioning problematic. And so the conclusion/the moral is scrambled. Doesn't fit into a simple formulation. Is left undone. Instead it resonates emotionally. And I think that is its final power. Timone's journey is not our journey. His transition is complete, his story has an ending, and ours is left open... we have searching left to do." -- Max Hepley, Boundless Magazine

Title: Beyond the Mind
By (author): Jema Fowler
ISBN10-13: 1912092832 : 9781912092833
BEYOND THE MIND explores meditation and mindfulness as therapy for tragedy and recurring negative thought. With a focus on the isolation faced by many during lockdown, the book takes you through the stages of mindfulness therapy and explains the practical uses for everyday life.

"One of the most significant and relatable aspects of Jema Fowler’s Beyond the Mind is her assessment of how COVID-19 both ignited the need for change within many of us and lead to feelings of anxiety. Going hand in hand with this idea, Fowler also highlights the impact that social media can have on our mindset, writing that: ‘social media has a positive side and can be beneficial and indeed it has been a lifeline to many during the Coronavirus crisis.’ Through her discussion, Fowler educates the reader on how our emotions and mental state can be affected by outward influences like the Coronavirus and social media, and informs us that we must try to limit their impact, ‘we do not have to be slaves to social media and all of us need to be mindful of what we allow to influence us and the input that we allow.’ Through her easy-to-follow format and digestible writing style, Fowler offers a piece of clarity and sense in a time that is so uncertain." -- Sophie Smith
