BAXT is a long-term photography project by Andrew Miksys, documenting the lives of the Lithuanian Roma. Beginning in 1999 during a Fulbright fellowship, Miksys sought to explore the fate of the Roma as Lithuania transitioned from Soviet rule to EU membershipâ a time when Roma culture was largely excluded from national identity. The project captures the erasure of the Roma neighborhood Taboras in Vilnius, which was demolished by authorities by 2020. Miksys photographed homes before their destruction and collected stories from residents, later incorporating materials from these sites into sculptural installations. In 2018, a planned BAXT exhibition at the Lithuanian National Library was canceled after Miksys referenced the Roma Genocide, prompting a legal battle he ultimately lost due to his lack of formal historical credentials. Now living in Å"agarÄ , a town where he first photographed a Roma family, Miksys continues to live the story of BAXTâ a journey shaped by history, displacement, and the winding path of fate.

    Title: BINGO

In 1981, Andrew Miksysâ father started publishing the Bingo Today newspaper in Seattle. The newspaper was filled with photographs his father took of bingo players and stories about the prizes they won. Advertising by local bingo halls paid the bills. Andrewâ s mom wrote the horoscopes. Andrew was introduced to the world of bingo when I was eleven and his parents took him to a bingo session for kids. He won $300. Within a few days he bought the best BMX bike I could find, a red and blue Redline MXIII. It was his dream bike. He went to a custom shop and put it together piece by piece. In very little time it had brought him fortune and the envy of all his friends. When Andrew got his driverâ s license at sixteen, his dad gave him the job of delivering the Bingo Today to bingo halls and convenience stores all around Seattle. Ten years later he returned to Seattle to visit his parents for Christmas and decided to revisit some of the bingo halls with his camera. The bingo hall managers and regulars remembered him from his delivery days and Andrew began making photographs for this project. Over the next seven years, he expanded the project and photographed in many other bingo halls around the United States. BINGO includes Andrewâ s color photographs, his fatherâ s black and white photographs, and some graphic design elements from Bingo Today.

    Title: Tulips

â Andrew Miksys, a seasoned traveler, ventures into this outcrop of Soviet iconography with the eye of a trickster, searching for signs of intimacy and memory in a land of grand delusions. In Belarus, Soviet-style celebrations and repressions are not things of the past. This makes picturing Belarus a tricky proposition, for the space between permissible and forbidden is very narrow. Framing this slivered landscape requires mastering the art of persuasion, and the ability to revive the personal within the frames of the official. Knowing this, Miksys builds his Belorussian itinerary as a conceptual manoeuvre, following the ideological formulas of mass celebrations of Soviet history in expectation of finding memories of the future. In the search for the space in between, he builds his itinerary as a conceptual sleight of hand, following the ideological formulas in expectation of finding the human landscape. ' - Laimonas Biedis, from photobook â Tulipsâ , 2016.
