Title: A Few of My Favorites
By (author): Armando Alleyne Text by: Tiona Nekkia McClodden
    ISBN10-13: 3907236254 : 9783907236253
â I donâ t only focus on jazz musicians. I also paint my family or iconic personalities such as Félix Trinidad, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Amadou Diallo and The Notorious B. I. G. who in one rendition is carrying the cross with Etta James as an angel. In a painting collage of Biggie, I placed a Tropicana Juice packaging where a handkerchief would be. With the jazz musicians Iâ d do the same; I collage cereal and cracker boxes to the subject matter. This reflects my belief that music is fortifying. â (Armando Alleyne) A Few of My Favorites is the first book of collected works by New York artist, Armando Alleyne. His painted and collaged renditions of jazz musicians, Afro-Latin singers, boxers, but also family members and acquaintances have a rhythm all-their-own. Parallel to his incessant practice of painting portraits of Black icons, Alleyne allows elements of his lived experience to take form in his work. Series such as Shelter Blues animate his first-hand experiences of homelessness. Another series, Mariaâ s Song calls on a pantheon of religious symbolism to pay homage to the sister he lost to AIDS. Included are erotic paintings which the artist based on magazine ads and models he staged. Never shying away from the seminal, the sensual or the political, Alleyneâ s lifetime of paintings tell a story of how we are subject to our city and how in it we can search for the tools to heal. The artworks are presented alongside a series of snapshots and personal anecdotes that memorialize artworks sold and people who are no longer with us.

    Title: A Happy Marriage
    By (author): Daniela Comani
    ISBN10-13: 390592952X : 9783905929522
Daniela Comani has been working on her photographic project, A Happy Marriage, since 2003. In her multifaceted photo series, she is her own model, playing man and woman at the same time in a modern intellectual marriage where the assignment of gender supposedly no longer plays a role. However, this is belied by the facial expressions, gestures, poses, and clothing of the subjects. The status of man/woman, relying entirely on the convention of the heterosexual couple, is so disconcerting, so subtle and subversive, that we find ourselves wondering who is who or who is playing which role. With texts in German, English and Italian.

Title: A Life with Art and Artists
By (author): Robert Haussmann Other: Robert Haussmann Interviewer: Dieter Schwarz
    ISBN10-13: 3907236386 : 9783907236383
Trix and Robert Haussmann are well known both in Switzerland and internationally for their vast contribution to design and interiors. Living and working together since the â 60s, symbiotically creating and also sharing wonderful interiors filled with works of art and beautiful objects, one can think of themâ and the spaces they inhabitâ as an ever-evolving â double self-portraitâ . The Haussmanns have had close ties to the avant-garde of their time, have followed the various trends and artistic currents and have actively participated in the local scenes of Zurich or Bern. Through documenting their numerous exchanges and conversations with artists, dealers and creative kindred spirits, this book is a testimony of their lifelong interest in the visual arts, their active, enthusiastic and witty involvement with the Swiss art scene as well as their rather playful commitment to it. A conversation with Swiss author and curator Dieter Schwarz reveals a number of events and anecdotes that also attest to the coupleâ s fascinating life with art which they have collected intuitively rather than with a particular strategy in mind throughout their lives and careers. The numerous photographic documents of their unique and somewhat exuberant interiors that span almost five decades and several homes are exemplary both of the distinctive way in which Trix and Robert Haussmann welcome works of art into their everyday lives alongside their furnitureâ including their ownâ and their various artefacts as well as of their very personal and playful use of mirrors.

Title: AA Bronsonâ s House of Shame
By (author): AA Bronson Edited by: Vincent Simon Text by: Philip Aarons, Defne Ayas, Elijah Burger, Paul Clinton, Matthias Herrmann, Richard John Jones, Bradford Kessler, Terence Koh
    ISBN10-13: 3907236319 : 9783907236314
A nocturnal secret ritual performed by two naked men in a hotel room in the Netherlands; a woven tent where the artist dressed as a mage encounters visitors to share their traumas; buttplugs adorned with rooster feathers; a collection of queer zines; anal-sprayed tartan paintings; a zen garden of mugwort. A few of the singular artistic gestures AA Bronson committed in the last few years are united in this book. After his General Idea partners, Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal, passed away in 1994, AA Bronson had to learn how to keep on living by himself, inventing a personal identity without his former companions, creating a new community of work, friendship and love. These issues have been at the core of his art in the last 25 years. He has developed a work where collaboration with other artists, especially younger queer artists, and creation of a social bond are central. AA Bronsonâ s House of Shame aims to emphasize this social dimension in his work through an overview of a series of exhibitions he made between 2013 and 2018. These are shows that bring together a community of artists; shows where performances and rituals, often invisible, contribute to the creation of a shared experience; a unique blend of art, friendship, collaboration, spirituality and humour. The book is in two-parts. An initial monographic section, which includes an essay and an interview with the artist, brings together the works and the exhibitions. In the second, choral part, friends have been invited to bear witness and write a sort of â journal de bord,â telling the tale of five years of the artistâ s community life. With a foreword by Vincent Simon, a text by Paul Clinton, and an interview by Frédéric Bonnet, and contributions from Philip Aarons, Defne Ayas, Elijah Burger, Matthias Herrmann, Richard John Jones, Bradford Kessler, Terence Koh, Sholem Krishtalka, Mark Jan Krayenhoff van de Leur, Gareth Long, Chrysanne Stathacos, Scott Treleaven, and Louwrien Wijers.

Title: After Nature. Cacti, Corals and Leaves
By (author): Claudia Comte Interviewer: Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, Hans Ulrich Obrist Text by: Yann Chateigne Tytelman
    ISBN10-13: 390723653X : 9783907236536
Snow-clad marble sculptures of cactuses, pencil sketches of corals and renderings of leaf shapes seemingly suspended in mid-air, interspersed with grids of neon-colored sculptures and alarming newspaper headlines warning of the â ghastlyâ climate apocalypse that lies in store for us: This artist's book explores the diverse reference system of forms and materials, plants, animals and other subjects out of which Claudia Comte develops her biomorphic sculptures. While cactuses are well adapted to arid conditions, coral reefs, which form bio-diverse ecosystems at the bottom of the marine food chain, are wasting away due to the warming and acidi?cation of the ocean. Leaves, on the other hand, represent photosynthesis, the energy-converting process that gives off oxygen. Comteâ s supernatural fusion of cactus, coral and leaf draws connections between aspects of the desert, ocean, and forest through various processes of material metamorphosis. The book begins with an index of Comteâ s wooden sculptures, on which she confers ?rst-name monikers, as if they were her familiars. Based on sketches, they are carved in wood or executed in marble with the aid of digital media. So marble, a petri?ed representation of the sea, meets wood, a place of storage for natural terrestrial processes and a constant source of oxygen. The bookâ s focus is on our relationship to nature and the havoc weâ ve wrought on our environment, which are the principal themes of the artist's practice. Prophecies of doom culled from newspaper articles sound the alarm about the looming climate emergency, for coral reefs arenâ t the only critically endangered biomes.

    Title: Aisha
By (author): Yumna Al-Arashi Designed by: Naima Schalcher
    ISBN10-13: 3907236688 : 9783907236680
Aisha is Yemeni Egyptian American photographer and filmmaker Yumna Al-Arashiâ s first artistâ s book. This powerful, delicate publication, inspired by Al-Arashiâ s great-grandmother, Aisha, is an homage to the lineage of women that she descends from; women of the multidimensional and many-layered landscapes of the MENA region. Searching for an understanding of the tattoos that graced her great-grandmotherâ s body, Al-Arashi embraces the complexities of a symbolic matriarchal tradition. Unable to visit one of her places of origin, the war-stricken Yemen, Yumna traveled through Northern Africa meeting and photographing a diverse group of women belonging more or less to the same generation: all standing, sitting, looking, moving and laughing with assuredness and joy. By refusing the violence of selection and definition surrounding womenâ s practices, Al-Arashi publishes every single photograph from her journey in this 392 page monograph, moving the work into an ethereal cinematic celebration. Al-Arashiâ s images are gentle yet strong in composition, conscientiously connecting the woman to the land surrounding her and vice versa; they are incredibly rich in detail and color; and they are intimate, beautifully defiant and full of community and alliance. Aisha also includes Al-Arashiâ s writing and poetry in which she reflects on memories of her great-grandmother and the scent of oudh â that left a trail of magic wherever she floated in that home.â In her genre-stretching texts, Al-Arashi also speaks on colonial archives, intergenerational storytelling and on the complexities of transnational female identity in patriarchal, capitalist, and imperialist societies at-large.

    Title: All Eyes On Me
    By (author): Maï Lucas
    ISBN10-13: 3907236785 : 9783907236789
All Eyes On Me is a long-term project, born of the passion of Paris-based photographer Maï Lucas. Shot between 1990 and 2010, her photographs capture the hip-hop and street culture of New Yorkâ s African-American and Hispanic communities, from Jones Beach to the Bronx, via Harlem and East New York. These were the years in which New Yorkâ s African-Americans and Caribbean Latinos were able to deploy a singular creative power, forging an identity of their own, free from dominant codes and norms. This expression, deeply rooted in the margins, carried a new aesthetic and energy, still untouched by commercial logic. Long before it was taken up and re-configured by the fashion and branding industries â spaces in which this culture has now been diluted, if not deliberately projected â it affirmed a fiercely independent symbolic sovereignty. By approaching her subjects with respect, empathy, and love, Maï Lucas creates photographs of palpable authenticity, imbued with grace and deep humanity. She reveals the beauty of a youth whose creativity is expressed as much in everyday clothing and family life as in ecstatic dance and celebration. Lucasâ s protagonists shine with pride in her portraits. Born in Paris in 1968 to a Vietnamese mother and a French father, Maï Lucas began photographing in her teens when her father gave her a camera. Since then, photography has become her preferred artistic medium. Swept up as a young girl in the exhilarating whirlwind of Parisâ s emerging hip-hop scene, she documented the birth of this movement and her circle through the lens of a Nikon FM2. Several of the young hip-hop artists she immortalized at the time went on to become major figures in the French music and film scenes, whose aesthetics and lifestyle are now omnipresent.

    Title: AS 15-16
    By (author): Luciano Rigolini
    ISBN10-13: 3906803635 : 9783906803630
Three long sequences of pictures show a desert landscape of dust and rock. Itâ s hard to make out the imperceptible differences between one picture and the next. Only on closer inspection do we notice minimal shifts in the frame. The small-square Cartesian coordinate systems on the pictures suggest an underlying scientific purpose. And indeed, the pictures are parts of a series of NASA Archive photographs shot by astronauts for scientific purposes during the lunar landing missions Apollo 15 and Apollo 16. But Luciano Rigoliniâ s minimalistic conceptual approach brings out an unlooked-for aesthetic dimension to the pictures. The artist uses a photographic sequence for a metaphorical trip to the moon that bears little resemblance to all the jingoistic hype around the moon landing as a heroic milestone of conquest. By closely scrutinizing our faithful satellite, Rigolini transforms the NASA photographs from documentary material into artworks that tap into manâ s eternal musings on the mythological and symbolic sides of the moon. AS 15-16 includes allusions to avant-garde and Land Art as well as minimal music, which also makes use of serial patterns and minute variations.

    Title: Bildrausch. Drawings 1966 â 2018
    Sub-title: Drawings
By (author): Walter Pfeiffer Edited by: Tim Saltarelli
    ISBN10-13: 390680349X : 9783906803494
Walter Pfeiffer is now a world-renowned photographer. Although he began his artistic career as a draftsman, Pfeifferâ s drawings are known to precious few. So this book is an overdue overview of his graphic work, continually engaged in a fertile dialogue with his photographic work. In the early 1970s Pfeiffer produced large-scale hyper-realistic pencil drawings that served as points of departure and even working models for his photographs. This style gave rise to personal works as well as Pfeifferâ s legendary posters for the ZÃ"rich Filmpodium, magazine illustrations and commissioned portraits. Beginning in the 1980s and especially in the â 90s, Pfeiffer gave up photography for a time to focus on drawings in China ink, colored pencils and watercolors, in which the elegant free play of lines and colors moves into the foreground: intimate portraits of beautiful boys and the artistâ s close women friends, still lifes and flowers. These pictures are characterized by a cheerful, wakeful sensuality, sure lines and alternation between graphic reduction and a taste for rich ornamentation. This publication is not a conventional retrospective, but a stand-alone artistâ s book in which to discover the vivacity of his drawings and a new Walter Pfeiffer.

Title: Black Ark, Lee Scratch Perry
    ISBN10-13: 3907236661 : 9783907236666
The point of departure for the book Black Ark with Lee â Scratchâ Perry (1936â 2021), a Jamaican musical and visual artist who was based in Switzerland, is a detailed inventory of photographs and writings (Spring 2021) from the Black Ark Studios in Kingston, Jamaica, where Lee produced his music from 1973 on. He was a seminal pioneer of dub, an electronic subgenre of reggae that uses sampling, looping, remixing, reverb and echoes to create new songs as well as rework and appropriate pre-recorded songs and tracks. Black Ark Studios was one of the cradles of dub. Itâ s also where Lee â Scratchâ Perryâ s musical approach found an enduring visual counterpart in the form of continuously evolving mural paintings and drawings as well as shape-shifting assemblages of records, instruments, found objects, posters, newspaper and magazine clippings, and appropriated books. The artworks form actual layers upon layers that are rhizomatically intertwined with the studio building itself as well as with the furniture insideâ and with Perryâ s biography and persona. Perry created his very own, dense and eclectic worldâ a world that is documented in Black Ark, before it disappears for good: the premises have recently been sold. The photographic documentation of the studio was supplemented by efforts to secure and preserve Perryâ s cultural objects as part of a joint project with various cultural institutions. Black Ark which reflects the rhythm and layering effects of collage both in its content and the materials used to craft the book. Perry was involved in the conception of the book in its early stages. It also interweaves various media and chronologies. The new photographs of the Black Ark Studios will be juxtaposed with stills from old documentaries and archival photos. The idea of a â houseâ serves as both a working hypothesis and a metaphor. It will be the starting point and endpoint of various thematic strands, both visual and textual: for example, the book will explore the Black Ark as a â spiritual yardâ in the context of African diaspora, as well as looking into archeomusicological aspects. Furthermore, extended captions by Perryâ s biographer will provide the backdrop for a kaleidoscopic panorama of Perryâ s eclectic and ingenious work.
