    Title: "Our Glorious Past"
Sub-title: Lukashenka`s Belarus & the Great Patriotic War
    By (author): David R Marples
    ISBN10-13: 383820574X : 9783838205748
This timely book examines how the regime of President Aliaksandr Lukashenka has used the 'Great Patriotic War' (1941-45) as a key element in state and identity formation in Belarus. The campaign was discernible from 2003 and intensified after a rift with Russia that led to a re-examination of the earlier policy of close political and economic partnership. David R. Marples focuses in particular on the years 2009 and 2010, which commemorated two 65th anniversaries: the liberation of Minsk (3 July 1944) and the end of World War II in Europe (9 May 1945). Using a variety of sources, this unique book critically examines the official interpretations of the war from various angles: the initial invasion, occupation, the Partisans, historic sites and monuments, films, documentaries, museums, schools, and public occasions commemorating some of the major events. Relying on first-hand research, including books recommended by the Ministry of Education, state-controlled media and examinations through personal visits to the major historic sites and monuments of Belarus, Marples explains and measures the effectiveness of Lukashenkas program. In outlining the main tenets of the state interpretation of the war years, the book highlights the distortions and manipulations of historical evidence as well as the dismissal of alternative versions as 'historical revisionism'. It assesses the successes and weaknesses of the campaign as well as its long term effects and prospects.

Title: Civil Society in Central & Eastern Europe
Edited by: Heiko Pleines, Sabine Fischer Series edited by: Heiko Pleines, Sabine Fischer, Hans-Henning Schröder
    ISBN10-13: 3838200411 : 9783838200415
Utilising a wide range of empirical cases, the contributions in this edited volume highlight the different aspects of the role, development and societal background of civil society in Central and Eastern Europe. The first part of the book deals with dissent under socialism. The second part of the book looks at the role of civil society in the Western Balkans in the context of the break-up of the former Yugoslavia and the related ethnic conflicts. The third part goes on to examine the role of civil society in the post-Soviet region, which is marked by authoritarian tendencies. The fourth part returns to Central Eastern Europe with an analysis of the impact of EU accession on the role of civil society and considers the underlying aspects of a 'common European memory'. The final section of the book looks at two cases - one from Central Eastern Europe, one from the CIS region -- of political participation and lobbying by civil society organisations. This book presents a selection of the papers diskussed at the Changing Europe Summer School on 'Civil Society in Central and Eastern Europe' held at the National University of 'Kyiv-Mohyla Academy' (NAUKMA), Ukraine, in July 2009.
    Reviews:
"The collection "Civil Society in Central and Eastern Europe" highlights a fact that the debate about a European civil society often neglects: The civil societies in the countries of Middle and Eastern Europe are relatively young and the experience of an authoritarian regime still fresh". -- Birgit Sittermann, Forschungsjournal NSB

    Title: Das sowjetische Fieber
    Sub-title: Fußballfans im poststalinistischen Vielvölkerreich
    By (author): Manfred Zeller
    ISBN10-13: 3838207572 : 9783838207575
What did the citizens of the Soviet Union identify with? Where did the societal faultlines lie? Did mass demonstrations effectively de-stabilize Soviet order? How did informal groups come into being within a society based on uniformity? What impact did new media and new forms of interconnectivity have on the development of a multinational Soviet society? What remained after the end of the Soviet Union? Using Soviet soccer teams from Moscow (Spartak, Dynamo, ZSKA) and Kiev (Dynamo) as examples, Manfred Zeller tells a story of community and enmity in the post-Stalinist multinational empire. This brilliant monograph exposes the complex loyalties that governed group identities and explains phenomena like the love-hate relationship between Kiev and Moscow. 'Moscow against Kiev' in Soviet times wasn't a question of war and peace, but in soccer it was already a feeling of 'us against them' and a question of victory or defeat in the complex multinational setting of the region. Zeller's book is an important contribution to the research of Soviet pop culture after Stalin as well as to contemporary debates on antagonism in the post-Soviet world.

Title: Der Abschied vom Kommunismus - die Rückkehr nach Europa?
Sub-title: Beiträge zur russischen und polnischen Zeitgeschichte
By (author): Leonid Luks Series edited by: Gunter Dehnert, John Andreas Fuchs, Leonid Luks
    ISBN10-13: 3838204042 : 9783838204048
Text in German.

    Title: Die "Russische Partei"
Sub-title: Die Bewegung der russischen Nationalisten in der UdSSR 1953-1985

Text in German.

Title: Mit der Dakota in die Freiheit
Sub-title: Fluchten aus der kommunistischen Tschechoslowakei per Flugzeug und Zug, 19481953
    By (author): Slavomir Michalek
    ISBN10-13: 3838214986 : 9783838214986
Text in German. Migration from the country -- this phenomenon can be found wherever there are undemocratic, generally unfree conditions. There are numerous examples and fates where fleeing the homeland was the only option, as in the Czech and Slovak history of the 20th century at the time of totalitarian regimes. In his present book, Slavomír Michálek deals with escapes from Czechoslovakia (ČSR) in the years 1948 to 1953. In doing so, he looks in particular at four hijackings of civilian aircraft and a passenger train and the subsequent "response of the communist hammer", the Czechoslovak State Security (tB ). The foreign political context associated with the kidnappings and the resulting consequences are also highlighted. With the takeover of power by the communist regime in the Czech Republic and as a result of its totalitarian character, the waves of flight began - people were fleeing in search of their salvation, their freedom and a new home. Refugees towards democracy, whether for economic, political or social reasons, characterized the entire 40-year existence of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia. With his book, Slavomír Michálek offers an excellent introduction to a closer examination of the subject of flight and the causes of flight.

Title: Popular is Not Enough: The Political Voice of Joan Baez
Sub-title: A Case Study in the Biographical Method
    By (author): Markus Jaeger
    ISBN10-13: 383820106X : 9783838201061
In his study, Markus Jäger explores the coalescence of Joan Baez's work as a singer and songwriter with her endeavours as a political activist throughout the last fifty years. He illustrates an American popular singer's significance as a political activist - for her audiences and for her opponents as well as for those victims of politically organised violence who have profited from her work. Mingling popular culture with political activism can turn into a helpful means when it comes to a non-violent progress of society. Joan Baez's work offers an excellent example for this hypothesis.

    Title: Stalins Kommandotruppen 1941-1944
    By (author): Alexander Gogun
    ISBN10-13: 3838207203 : 9783838207209
There are certain parallels between the operations Vladimir Putin initiated in the wake of the Ukraine crisis of 2014 and the approach Stalin took in the region during the Second World War. Stalin's ruthless use of scorched earth tactics, the deliberate provocation of reprisals of the occupiers against the civilian population, the destruction of their own villages, the chaotic collection of taxes in kind from the population, accompanied by everyday looting, benders, fornication and violence, fratricidal internal conflicts, the use of doping, the operational use of bacteriological weapons, and even cannibalismall this was not a random price for the massive bloodshed and no spontaneous response of the population to the brutality of the German occupation in the 1940s. These were, as Alexander Gogun shows in his historiographical investigation, planned or consciously accepted phenomena and peculiarities of Stalin's warfare tactics. A book that makes an important contribution to the historical context of the current crisis in Ukraine. Alexander Gogun has published numerous scientific works on partisan warfare, on Ukrainian nationalism, the communist secret services, as well as the foreign policy of the USSR during the Second World War. He is currently working at the Free University of Berlin. Gogun also lectured at the University of Potsdam on the history of Stalinism, the Soviet Union in World War II, and the post-Stalinist USSR. This volume was previously published by two leading publishing houses in Russia (2008, 2012) as well as in Polish (2011) and Ukrainian (2014).

    Title: Transmissibility & Cultural Transfer
Sub-title: Dimensions of Translation in the Humanities
Edited by: Jennifer K. Dick, Stephanie Schwerter
    ISBN10-13: 3838204026 : 9783838204024
This book brings together monumental voices in the social sciences -- such as Jean-René Ladmiral from Paris and Peter Caws from Washington DC -- to begin to address the Humanities' specific issues with and debt to translation. Calling for a re-examination of how translations are read, critiqued, and taught in Philosophy, History, Political Science and Sociology departments, this book provides tools for reflection, bases for reconsideration of given translations, and historical observations on how thought has been shaped across national borders. The volume ends with four case studies -- examples from auto-translation in postcolonial literature, cultural issues of translation in Chinese-language cinema, negotiating meaning between linguistically and culturally different audiences in the United States and Lebanon, to verbal-visual questions of translation in marketing to German and French clients. All in all, this book is a comprehensive, compact survey of the cultural and linguistic translation and transmission issues in the social sciences today. The book is illuminating and informative. A great tool for study or debate.
