    Title: Anthem
    By (author): Oji Haynes
    ISBN10-13: 195487717X : 9781954877177
â An artist tends to never think about the breath of their career in a fully flourished way. From start to finish, Beginning to end, inside and out. But all in all, there is a process to brilliancy as an artist. Starting out with the simplest forms of ideas then slowly evolving those ideas one by one, thought by thought until you have reached another plateau of knowledge. I don't know if there is ever a lineal destination of an artist's work, but I know there is always an early start. These works are prime examples of what I consider "early work". The stage of work that I am currently moving within will further be considered as such once l have reached new plateaus. My understanding of this stage allows me to give myself grace and belief in my growth and progress as an artistâ ¦â Oji Haynes (b.1999) is a cultural practitioner with a focus in the photographic medium. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He has been awarded the CCNY Dean's Prize in Art as well as a recipient of the 2022 NADA Miracle Seltzer Grant prize. Haynes has also participated in the New York Times Portfolio Review and has been shortlisted for the annual Palm Photo Prize which allowed his work to be included in a group show at 1014 gallery in London.

    Title: Black Snafu
    By (author): Andre Ramos-Woodard
    ISBN10-13: 1954877102 : 9781954877108
â Anti-Blackness seems inescapably mixed into whatever context I place it into; literature, science, government, health, art... look into any "field" and see for yourself. My people have had to cry, scream, and fight for respect for centuries, and we still have not gained what we deserve. To move past the damage this has done to our society, we can't simply deny our history-we must recognize it. We must acknowledge the many ways in which this country has perpetuated a racial hierarchy since these lands were first colonized and stripped from indigenous peoples, and Black people were stolen from their native land and brought to Americaâ ¦â Raised in the Southern states of Tennessee and Texas, André Ramos-Woodard (he/ they) is a photo-based artist who uses their work to emphasize the experiences of the marginalized communities while accenting the repercussions of contemporary and historical discrimination. His art conveys ideas of communal and personal identity, influenced by their direct experience with life as a queer African American. Focusing on Black liberation, queer justice, and the reality of mental health, he aspires for his art to help bring power to the people.

    Title: Blood on the Ballast
    By (author): Marshall Scheuttle
    ISBN10-13: 1954877137 : 9781954877139
â Fall of 2020 saw the intersection of the covid-19 pandemic, a looming presidential election and mass protests against atrocities committed by the police state. The election would be preceded by 3 Presidential debates to be held in Cleveland, Miami and Nashville. Starting in Cleveland, I would set out on a month long road trip to photograph at and in between each of the debates. Culminating in a final trip to Pennsylvania on Election Day. My only guidelines were to abstain from breaching any press Barriers at the debates, I would instead experience them amidst the protests, rallies and unsettling moments betweenâ ¦â Marshall Scheuttle is a Las Vegas-based artist who mostly makes his home on the road. He holds an MFA from the University of Hartford, and a BFA from SUNY Purchase College. A 2020 NAC Fellow, Scheuttle's work has been widely exhibited, including Aperture Gallery and The Albright Knox Museum. His work is held in collections including the Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago) and Burchfield Penny Art Center (Buffalo, NY).

    Title: Cairo Dream
    By (author): Anthony Hamboussi
    ISBN10-13: 1954877234 : 9781954877238
I was born in Brooklynâ , New York to working classâ Egyptian parents in the last week of 1969. When I beganâ photographing in Cairo, my intention was to reclaim myâ identity as an Egyptian and to engage in a dialogue about theâ environmental conditions that make up the city of Cairo. Iâ set down my camera in public space imagining that I tooâ could be objective. I was led to question my â Americanâ wayâ of thinking by events unfolding around me: a revolution,â a military coup, and also, by the ways and generosity ofâ everyday people. Anthony Hamboussi is a photographer, born in Brooklyn, New York in 1969. His work has been exhibited in the Townhouse Gallery, Cairo, International Center of Photography, MoMA/PS1, Americas Society, Queens Museum and SculptureCenter, New York. He has published two monographs, Newtown Creek: A Photographic Survey of New Yorkâ s Industrial Waterway and Cairo Ring Road. He has co-authored two books; What is Affordable Housing? with the Center for Urban Pedagogy and LIC in Context with Place in History. Hamboussi has received grants from the Aaron Siskind Foundation, Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, Jerome Foundation, En Foco, and the New York State Council on the Arts in Architecture, Planning & Design. He is the founder of L Nour Editions a non-profit publisher specializing in photo books by artists from the Middle East and their diaspora. Hamboussi currently teaches at City College in New York and lives in Brooklyn with his wife and daughter.

    Title: Conflagration
    By (author): Aaron Huey
    ISBN10-13: 1954877242 : 9781954877245
There is something seductive about a temporaryâ apocalypse, the kind you can enter knowing it is notâ yours. Knowing that you can return to your unburned,â unflooded, uninterrupted world. For now. Eventually there will be no escape from theâ climate crisis or the conflagrations that rise from theâ compounding, cascading issues of consumption andâ overpopulation that light up our laptops and phoneâ screens in endless feeds of images like mine. And yes, Iâ know it was more than our changing climate that burnedâ LA. It was Santa Ana winds, the urban-wildland interface,â arson and power lines, and all the other elements ofâ this perfect storm. But I also know that our climate willâ continue to remind us of our consumption with eventsâ like these, closer together and more extreme. And thatâ story is bigger than the details of each chapter or theâ individuals in the images. I had already decided I would start following that larger story when I saw the city on fireâ that first night and started packing my bags for the airport.â ..

    Title: Monument
    By (author): Yoav Horesh
    ISBN10-13: 1954877188 : 9781954877184
â As an artist and an educator with a long history of interest in and previous work done around the topics of memory, memorials, monuments and trauma in The Middle East, Europe, Asia, and America, I found myself driving more than 12 hours to Richmond, Virginia to photograph dozens of Confederate monuments and the civil unrest in this southern state capital. It was a sudden and an urgent matter as these statues were in the process of losing their ground amongst a heated debate about their visual content, purpose, locations, and futureâ ¦â Born in Jerusalem, Israel, Yoav Horesh has exhibited internationally in galleries and museums in Germany, Italy, Israel, the United States, Sweden, Russia, Hong Kong, Myanmar and Peru. Yoavâ s work has been featured by Amnesty International, as well as in magazines, art journals, and websites across three continents. He has given public lectures and artists talks in art schools, universities, and galleries in The United States, Israel, China and Europe.

    Title: People of the Sun
    By (author): Melissa Alcena
    ISBN10-13: 1954877129 : 9781954877122
â The Bahamas has suffered a lot in the past couple of years-enduring the aftermath and unfathomable devastation of Hurricane Dorian and then receiving another massive blow, that was the Covid-19 pandemic shortly after. As an artist whose creations at the time were totally reliant upon my interactions with Bahamians in the everyday, to say that this time had been difficult for me would be an understatement. But with the introduction of safety protocols and vaccines, I was able to adjust my process and continue to create imagesâ ¦â Melissa Alcena is a Bahamian portrait and documentary photographer based between The Bahamas and NYC. Alcenaâ s practice has been the lens through which she has reintroduced herself to the Bahamian landscape, after studying in Canada. Through this exploration and reintroduction, Alcena documents people in situ, expanding the visual tropes often exported from the Caribbean. Often in conversation with her subjects, Alcenaâ s photographs are a testament to kinship and an ode to the landscape.

    Title: Tell Me About Saigon
    By (author): Tracy Dong
    ISBN10-13: 1954877110 : 9781954877115
An excerpt from the book: "After April 30, 1975, the North took over South Vietnam. I was forced into a detention camp for 3 years. I was given only one suit of clothes for my whole time there, a brown and white striped prisoner uniform. Most of my work was to cut down trees and transport lumber. At times we'd have to cross rivers where the water would reach my chest. I'd dry my only set of clothes in my tent. We were treated worse than prisoners. When I was released in 1978, my life did not return to normal, as the new government treated me differently because of my history as an officer. I had to report to the government day and night of my daily activities. I had my valuables confiscated. I could not find work, I had to use my mother's last name to work secretly at a soap factory. I had to burn the photos and any record of myself of who I was in the war. I saved up gold that I earned at the factory to use as a bribe to escape the country by boat. Finally, in 1989, after 5 attempts, me, your mother and sister escaped on a boat with 135 other people." Tracy Dong (b. Vancouver, Canada) is a Vietnamese-Canadian artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Dong focuses on evaluating the vulnerabilities, complexities, melody, and motion of the human condition, with an emphasis on representing the Asian diaspora experience and LGBTQIA+ communities. For her, the camera is a way of finding order in complex situations, using a painterly eye to light, color, shape and line to convey their underlying mood and atmosphere. She seeks a deep, emotional connection with her subjects, finding intimate spaces and encounters amidst the chaos of the everyday.

Title: Waterworks: The Hidden Water System of New York
    By (author): Stanley Greenberg
    ISBN10-13: 1954877196 : 9781954877191
Waterworks, an exploration of New York Cityâ s water supply and wastewater treatment systems, was originally published in 2003. This new and expanded edition is a complete reworking of the book, featuring 362 photographs made between 1992 and 2024, and two new large folded insert maps. Greenberg visited reservoirs, aqueducts, tunnels, gatehouses, water supply and sewer pumping stations, water tanks, wastewater treatment plants, stormwater retention facilities and maintenance covers throughout the watershed and around the city. The maps identify over 400 sites in the system, from upstate reservoirs to abandoned systems and tunnel shaft sites. In the late 1990s, Greenberg received unprecedented access to photograph the system, which made much of this work possible. After 9/11, all facilities were closed to the public. Since then, Greenberg located hundreds of sites in plain view but largely unknown and unidentified; anonymous street furniture invisible to most people. The book and map â a field guide for anyone called to their own exploration â show a mostly underground and hidden system. The map is based on field investigations and historical documents and is designed by Greenberg and Larry Buchanan. Stanley Greenberg (b. Brooklyn, NY) has been photographing the built environment since the early 1980s. He is the author of Invisible New York, Olmsted Trees, Springs and Wells, CODEX: New York, Time Machines, and Under

    Title: Wildfire
    By (author): Philip Cheung
    ISBN10-13: 1954877250 : 9781954877252
The sky over the Pacific Palisades had turned the colorâ of rust, with the thick smoke blocking the late afternoonâ sun. When I arrived just a couple of hours after the firstâ reports of the Palisades fire had come in, multimillion-dollar homes and the hills above them were alreadyâ on fire as I turned off Sunset Boulevard and enteredâ a residential neighborhood in the Pacific Palisades. Theâ roads leading out of the hills were filled with evacuationâ traffic that clogged the winding streets. In contrast,â others had abandoned their cars altogether, shoulderingâ backpacks, pets, and whatever they could carry⠦⠨⠨Philip Cheung is a photographer living and working in Los Angeles and has extensive experience in the Middle East, where he was previously based. His commissioned and personal work covers a range of photographic projects, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Los Angeles wildfires, the history of Chinese railroad workers in America, and the portraiture of celebrities and public figures.
