Title: BLUEPRINT 2017â 20
By (author): Norman Behrendt
ISBN10-13: 9198405942 : 9789198405941
Blueprint 2017â 20 explores how the mass media has influenced political debates and democratic processes during the process of Brexit. Norman Behrendt's photographs of Brexit-related video material examine what sort of imagery is used to influence people by stirring up deep-seated attitudes around national pride, immigration and lack of control. The blue color of the cyanotypes reflects the invisible influence of the European Union on the United Kingdom. When Norman Behrendt arrived in London from Berlin in August 2017, he set out to document Britain in the period of its transition out of the EU. He crisscrossed the Remain-voting capital and its Brexit-voting outer suburbs by bicycle, foot and public transport. The photographs that he took revealed material traces of class, race, nationality and income disparity that had fed into the referendumâ s result, but they did not get under the skin of the issue in the way that he wanted. Abstract and diffuse, the shift in Britainâ s sense of itself eluded a traditional documentary approach. At night, Behrendt surfed the internet, making screengrabs from pro- and anti-Brexit videos on mainstream media, YouTube and social media sites. He immersed himself in official political messaging, amateur propaganda and personal video posts, giving equal attention to both sides of the debate. â I am interested in how the mass media contributed to a post-truth political environment. By photographing details of publicly accessible online video content, uploaded on various media channels including newspapers, magazines, Leave and Remain Youtube channels, documentaries and political debates in the UK and EU parliaments, I disassemble the visual layers into their individual parts and thereby scrutinize and recycle these pixelated, transient images. In my presentation I bring these different visual extracts together, rearrange them and thereby form a new narrative. â - Norman Behrendt

Title: El Retrato de tu Ausencia
By (author): Alejandro Morales
ISBN10-13: 9198760653 : 9789198760651
During a period of six years Alejandro Morales collected more than 500 photographs depicting bodies published his local newspaper P.M. in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. The time of extreme violence made Ciudad Juárez among the most violent cities in the world, marked by the large number of intentional homicides committed in its streets. The limits of what the press could publish were blurred as it was so common to find oneself in the middle of a shootout or come across an abandoned corpse. Morales removed all the corpses that he found in the photographs in the P.M. Newspaper by manually erasing them with a gum eraser. Morales approached the newspaper from its name, understanding it as a "Post Mortem" space. When what was supposed to be in the image no longer appeared, the void that was left opened up a chance to think about what was actually happening. The softness of the eraser, the duration of the erasing process and its ritual connotations confront the immediacy and brutality of these cases. These new images intend to grant an opportunity for mourning, a more dignified form of death.

Title: Filling in the Gaps
By (author): Marcus Gustafsson
ISBN10-13: 9199023512 : 9789199023519
"In his debut book Filling in the Gaps, Marcus Gustafsson explores a deeply personal and complex narrative about his fatherâ s alcoholism and its impact on himself and his family. The project reconciles fragmented memories to better understand the circumstances that have shaped his life and relationships, while also serving as an effort toward healing and reconnecting with his fractured family. It confronts the duality of growing up with an alcoholic parentâ the struggle to break free while remaining bound by a shared historyâ and the void left behind when the familyâ s unifying figure is gone. The work examines how addiction alters family dynamics, leaves lasting marks, and challenges the possibility of moving forward. In Filling in the Gaps, Marcus combines his own images with archival family photographs. His visual language is raw yet stylized, documenting his fatherâ s daily life and surroundings while also turning the camera toward himself, reflecting the tension between reality and memory. Altered family photosâ taped or drawn overâ become acts of reclamation, as he infuses inherited memories with his own voice. Filling in the Gaps is an emotional exploration of trauma, showing how revisiting painful memories can open paths toward reconciliation and peace with the past."

Title: Gravity
By (author): Aapo Huhta
ISBN10-13: 919876067X : 9789198760675
Aapo Huhta's book Gravity presents a collection of black and white studio portraits of human figures and shapes combined with imagery of mummified remains from late 16th-century Sicily. In these gently surreal scenes, human bodies float, enveloped in grainy textures from chemical residues and light leaks. By photographing and rephotographing through transparent and reflective objects, Huhta transforms the figures into contorted human-like creatures. He also manipulates the interaction of film, developer, and overly expired photographic paper by hand and re-establishes the unpredictability into a process that is commonly sought to be controlled. â Gravity seems to take place just outside of the imaginary event horizon of a fantastic black hole, in a limbo where both matter and concepts are altered to the point of collapse. The disintegration of the body is exposed in all its terrifying beauty as Huhta rejects the norms of depicting the human individual. But embedded within the endless night of Gravity's outer space are clues of what lies beyond the final loss of power: the end is an enduring arid landscape. This, then, is what peace looks like.â -Helen Korpak The catalyst for the work Gravity was a change in identity that happened after becoming a parent. The result is a subjective interpretation of the complexity and fragility of human life and an intuitive response toward the unknown.

Title: IL MALOCCHIO
By (author): Andrea Simonato
ISBN10-13: 9198760602 : 9789198760606
According to old pagan beliefs Il Malocchio or â the evil eyeâ is a curse causing bad luck and misfortune. In his debut book Il Malocchio Italian photographer Andrea Simonato depicts the quiet villages of his home region of Vicenza in the Northern Italy as upon this curse of unluckiness causing decay and abandonment. On his walks through sleeping villages and their empty buildings, dark woods and resting groves Simonato makes extraordinary findings in the seemingly common surroundings. The work echoes both longing and hope, creating a beautiful and poetic, yet mysterious ode to a place called home. â When photographing I try to keep an open mind to whatever I come across. What I look for in a subject is to catch its enigmatic character, what it seems to be hiding rather than what it lets you see. Photographing in black and white helps me to abstract reality more easily by creating a sort of parallel world that is precisely that of the photographic narrative itself. Il Malocchio creates a conceptual frame for my work, as it is inherent for me to explore the mysterious side of things. â

Title: Les yeux fermés
By (author): Eliot Nasrallah
ISBN10-13: 9198760734 : 9789198760736
Les yeux fermés explores how the human body can engage in a therapeutic healing process, as well as the role of performative photography in this journey. The few anonymous protagonists of the book are followed on a quest through a changing Mediterranean landscape, interacting with their surroundings. By engaging in rituals and performative actions, the body taps into external energies to fortify its inner strength. The journey culminates in Greece's Stefanos volcano, symbolising a new boundary to cross. The active volcano represents both danger and a lost paternal figure. Eliot Nasrallah, a French-Lebanese artist based in Paris, initiated the project after experiencing the loss of a place of personal significance, as a result of the loss of a loved one. The deliberately underexposed photographs create a visual language connected to broad themes of memory, absence and loss.

Title: MÃ RE
By (author): Julie Scheurweghs
ISBN10-13: 9198405993 : 9789198405996
"There is a great power in giving birth, one of transformation, hope and new beginnings. " In her debut book Mère, we see the artist Julie Scheurweghs in different stages of labour. Scheurweghs' natural home birth took 16 hours, and while being by her side, the whole process was closely documented by her partner. Later, while going through the photographs Scheurweghs noticed the details that accurately matched her recollections from the day. She claimed the photographs by cropping them to their bare essence, creating a new body of work showing the intensity of the experience. The skin-close, uncensored and heartfelt photographs of heavy contractions alternated with calm moments in between show us not only a baby being born, but the birth of a mother as well. â When I became pregnant I was extremely afraid of giving birth. The way delivery is depicted in media - screaming mothers surrounded by doctors - combined with horror stories from family of epidurals not working made me dread ever having to push a baby out. But as my pregnancy progressed I started to research on natural births and found comfort in seeing images of women in labour on social media. It gave me a sense of relief and I came to understand it doesnâ t need to be a negative experience, but could in fact be an empowering one. There is a great power in giving birth, one of transformation, hope and new beginnings. I want to share this with the world and I hope that women can find comfort in the work. â -Julie Scheurweghs Scheurweghsâ work is centered around womanhood: what it means to be a woman in this world, motherhood, intimate family life, and the female view. Ever since becoming a mother herself, Scheurweghs has focused on documenting the experience of giving birth in particular.

Title: Noema
By (author): Michael Swann
ISBN10-13: 9198760688 : 9789198760682
In 1961, in the small Spanish village of San Sebastian de Garabandal, four young girls had an apparition of the Virgin Mary. They entered a state of ecstasy in which they became completely unaware of their surroundings and sensory perceptions. Reportedly, witnesses would pinch the girls, pierce their skin with needles, lift them up and drop them onto rough rocks, and yet they remained entranced. The light and presence of the Virgin is all they claim to have experienced. Twenty years later, in the town of Medjugorje, in Bosnia & Herzegovina, six children also had simultaneous visions of the Virgin, with similar ecstatic qualities. In his debut book Noema Michael Swann investigates the aura of place and religious experience by searching for signs of the Virgin Maryâ s presence in these two locations. Alongside original photographs made at both sites, Noema also includes images that have been appropriated from video footage of the visionaries taken during their apparitions. These emphasise the impenetrability of the individual religious and phenomenological experience, and speaks to the separation between what is apparently being seen and what Is photographable.

Title: Notes for Our Legacy
By (author): Janne Riikonen
ISBN10-13: 9198760696 : 9789198760699
Billboards are strategically set up in high traffic areas, designed to catch our attention. They are positioned atop buildings, along highways, and in market squares. Even when devoid of advertisements, they continue to draw one's gaze. The sculpture-like metal frames and blank canvases remind of things that have come and gone. Even in the absence of advertising content, a billboard remains a medium of communication. But when empty of advertisement, what message does it convey? Janne Riikonen's book Notes For Our Legacy serves as a statement against the unsustainable culture of consumption and the values typically conveyed on billboards. â For as long as I can recall, I've been bothered by advertisementsâ both their appearance and the values they most often promote. I wish I didn't have to see them. The primary message of advertisements is very clear. Whether it's a product, a service, an education, or a political agenda; they aim to sell something. Yet beneath this primary message lies a more subtle, subliminal note of inadequacy â You can do, look and behave better. The work is a manifestation agains these messages, both primary and secondary. The values they promote and with whose terms all of this is done. The constant exposure to advertisements has inevitably contributed to people becoming more materialistic and focused on status. I believe that in a society not as saturated with advertisements, we would be more compassionate and considerate towards one another.â -Janne Riikonen

Title: Pants on Top of Shoes
By (author): Ivan Anisimov
ISBN10-13: 9199023504 : 9789199023502
"In 2022, photographer Ivan Anisimov left Russia and spent the next two years in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. There, he encountered the quiet weight of displacement â the sense of estrangement, of living under the gaze of others shaped by history and politics. Like many migrants, he navigated not only a new city but also the unseen boundaries of perception and belonging, where every encounter carried echoes of conflict and the search for home. Ivan started to wander the streets of Tbilisi, taking in the cityâ s corners and faces. Movement became his way of thinking, wandering his state of mind. What caught his attention were the local men â their shoes and trousers, the textures, folds, and forms, and the way their slightly too long pants draped over their shoes. Through the fleeting photographs of passersbyâ s feet, Pants on Top of Shoes becomes a meditation on modern alienation â people adrift in the flow of life, half-asleep, half-aware, caught in a quiet hypnosis of movement and solitude."
