Title: A Seat at the Table
Sub-title: The Life and Times of Shirley Chisholm
By (author): Glenn L. Starks, F. Erik Brooks
ISBN10-13: 1641609265 : 9781641609265
When Shirley Chisholm was asked why she would dare run for president, her response was, why not her? Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm rose from being the child of immigrants to the United States to running for the highest office in the land. She was both the first African American woman elected to the US Congress and the first African American woman of a major political party to make a serious run for president of the United States. These achievements were not in spite of her background but rather because of it. She persevered by being steadfast in her political convictions and unwilling to compromise on the issues she believed in. Chisholm directly challenged the political establishment and gave a political voice to so many segments of society that were historically ignoredâ women, racial minorities, young people, the gay community, domestic and agricultural workers, and the poorâ not only in her home district in Brooklyn, New York, but across the country. Her run for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination may not have ended in victory, but it was successful in forging a grassroots campaign that united diverse Americans behind a candidate who championed their collective interests. Her efforts laid the groundwork for change then, now, and in the future. Without Shirley Chisholm there may not have been a Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, or Kamala Harris. |

Title: Assata
Sub-title: An Autobiography
By (author): Assata Shakur Foreword by: Angela Davis
ISBN10-13: 1556520743 : 9781556520747
On May 2, 1973, Black Panther Assata Shakur (aka JoAnne Chesimard) lay in a hospital, close to death, handcuffed to her bed, while local, state, and federal police attempted to question her about the shootout on the New Jersey Turnpike that had claimed the life of a white state trooper. Long a target of J. Edgar Hoover's campaign to defame, infiltrate, and criminalize Black nationalist organizations and their leaders, Shakur was incarcerated for four years prior to her conviction on flimsy evidence in 1977 as an accomplice to murder. This intensely personal and political autobiography belies the fearsome image of JoAnne Chesimard long projected by the media and the state. With wit and candor, Assata Shakur recounts the experiences that led her to a life of activism and portrays the strengths, weaknesses, and eventual demise of Black and White revolutionary groups at the hand of government officials. The result is a signal contribution to the literature about growing up Black in America that has already taken its place alongside The Autobiography of Malcolm X and the works of Maya Angelou. Two years after her conviction, Assata Shakur escaped from prison. She was given political asylum by Cuba, where she now resides. |

Whatever happened to the regular Black girl? The one who works a nine-to-five or maybe owns her own business or is completing her masterâ s. Or how about the one figuring out how to be a good mom or wife or daughter? Or the one thatâ s doing all the above? Hi, thatâ s a lot of us. Black women are doing it all, and itâ s not just the Oprahs and Beyoncés. Thereâ s an entire group of us that are just, well, regular. Weâ re handling things, like determining if we should speak up in that work meeting and risk becoming the â voiceâ for all Black women, or considering whether tonight is the night to introduce our silk hair bonnet in the relationship that is just getting serious. These decisions range from impactful to trivial, but they shape who we are. So where is our place for this type of girl talk and unfiltered sharing? Gail Hamilton Azodo is your thirtysomething corporate ladder climber turned entrepreneur, mom, wife, and Black Girl IRL. In her dinners, happy hours, and group texts with Black women, they shared everything from motivational quotes to the latest in Black girl advice. Whether itâ s how to cut ties with friends who no longer align with our purpose or how to talk about money and embrace Black womenâ s wealth, Gail is here to share these authentic stories of everyday Black womenâ with a fair number of frills. |

Title: Everything That Rises
Sub-title: A Climate Change Memoir
By (author): Brianna Craft
ISBN10-13: 1641608609 : 9781641608602
One of Ms. magazineâ s â Most Anticipated Feminist Books of 2023â
Authentic and inspiring, Everything That Rises personalizes the realities of climate change by paralleling our relationship to the planet with the way we interact within our own homes. Nineteen-year-old Brianna Craft is having a panic attack. A professorâ s matter-of-fact explanation of the phenomenon known as â climate changeâ has her white-knuckling the table in her first environmental studies lecture. Out of her fatherâ s house, she was supposed to be safe. This moment changed everything for Brianna. For her first internship, she jumped at the chance to assist the Least Developed Countries Group at the United Nationsâ negotiations meant to produce a new climate treaty. While working for those most ignored yet most impacted by the climate crisis, she grappled with the negligent indifference of those who hold the most power. This dynamic painfully reminded her of growing up in a house where the loudest voice always won and violence silenced those in need. Four years later, Brianna witnessed the adoption of the first universal climate treaty, the Paris Agreement. In this memoir that blends the political with the personal, Brianna dives into what it means to advocate for the future, and for the people and places you love, all while ensuring your own voice doesnâ t get lost in the process. It will take all of us to protect our home. |

Title: Stokely Speaks
Sub-title: From Black Power to Pan-Africanism
By (author): Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture) Introduction by: Mumia Abu-Jamal Preface by: Bob Brown
ISBN10-13: 1556526490 : 9781556526497
In the speeches and articles collected in this book, the black activist, organizer, and freedom fighter Stokely Carmichael traces the dramatic changes in his own consciousness and that of black Americans that took place during the evolving movements of Civil Rights, Black Power, and Pan-Africanism. Unique in his belief that the destiny of African Americans could not be separated from that of oppressed people the world over, Carmichael's Black Power principles insisted that blacks resist white brainwashing and redefine themselves. He was concerned not only with racism and exploitation, but with cultural integrity and the colonization of Africans in America. In these essays on racism, Black Power, the pitfalls of conventional liberalism, and solidarity with the oppressed masses and freedom fighters of all races and creeds, Carmichael addresses questions that still confront the black world and points to a need for an ideology of black and African liberation, unification, and transformation. |

Title: The Assassination of Fred Hampton
Sub-title: How the FBI and the Chicago Police Murdered a Black Panther
Edition Statement: Updated Edition
By (author): Jeffrey Haas
ISBN10-13: 1641603216 : 9781641603218
In an era of mounting law enforcement abuse and rising public defiance, The Assassination of Fred Hampton is more relevant than ever. Read the story of Black Panther activist Hamptonâ s murder by Chicago police and attorney Jeff Haasâ s fight to bring the assassins to justice. On December 4, 1969, attorney Jeff Haas was in a police lockup in Chicago, interviewing Fred Hamptonâ s fiancée. Deborah Johnson described how the police pulled her from the room as Fred lay unconscious on their bed. She heard one officer say, â Heâ s still alive.â She then heard two shots. A second officer said, â Heâ s good and dead now.â She looked at Jeff and asked, â What can you do?â The Assassination of Fred Hampton remains Haasâ s personal account of how he and Peopleâ s Law Office partner Flint Taylor pursued Hamptonâ s assassins, ultimately prevailing over FBI stonewalling and unlimited government resources bent on hiding the conspiracy that led to Hamptonâ s death. Half a century later, Haas writes that there is still an urgent need for the revolutionary systemic changes Hampton was organizing to accomplish. Not only a story of justice delivered, this book spotlights Hampton as a dynamic community leader and an inspiration for those still fighting against injustice and the brutality of law enforcement.

"An extraordinary retelling of a shameful chapter in our history. . . . [The book] reveals just how easily justice can be thwarted and malicious aims diguised when powerful people conspire to violate the law (commit murder) and manipulate procedural to avoid responsibility for their crimes. . . . [A] cautionary tale, as well as a story of heroism." --Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness
