Title: Africa at the Tropenmuseum
By (author): Paul Faber
ISBN10-13: 946022119X : 9789460221194
This is the third volume of a series of ten books that discuss the collections of the Tropenmuseum and the histories and stories that accompany them. The books elucidate the often hidden backgrounds of a museum collection, discussing objects within their original context, social histories and their contemporary meaning. The emphasis lies on the history of the specific museum collection, with its different collecting and presentation practices placed in a particular time and place. Each volume is richly illustrated with objects and photographs from the Tropenmuseum collection. Africa at the Tropenmuseum is not meant to be a general book on art from Africa, but rather a treatise on the formation and development of a specific Africa collection, which started at the beginning of the twentieth century with the fusion of the collections of the Colonial Museum in Haarlem, and the ethnographic collection of Artis, the Amsterdam Zoo. Many early objects were lost again, before Africa was formally integrated in the Tropenmuseum's policy in 1950, when the colonial phase of the museum was concluded. The following decades saw several changing objectives, from an emphasis on development cooperation towards an orientation on art and culture. Collection policies followed, focusing on daily household objects, popular art and contemporary art and design. The result is a fragmented but vivid collection that gives access to many forms of African art and culture as well as to the mindset of European collectors, researchers, and museum workers. This richly illustrated book emphasizes this historical context and the way the objects were collected and presented to the public to this day.

In June 2010, South Africa is the platform for the biggest event that has ever taken place on the African continent: the football World Cup. In the run-up to the World Cup and during the event, Africa will be centre stage for a while instead of being forgotten. This book follows a football-mad continent on the road to this World Cup. It is a book of stories, primarily by African journalists and photographers, about the love of football. It shows Africa as we rarely see it: as a continent bubbling over with talent, ambition and opportunities. As well as highlighting the love of football itself, the book also pays a close attention to the social significance of football in Africa. Sporting successes create a feeling of dignity and pride in people, and the passion for football can bind them together, even in wartime. You will meet football-mad presidents, read about how the great Ethiopian athlete Haile Gebrselassie loves the game, the roles that Didier Drogba and George Weah played in bringing peace to the Ivory Coast and Liberia, and how young talents at a Ghanaian football academy are preparing for an international sporting career. Stars such as Michael Essien and Salomon Kalou speak out too, of course. The book also offers a perspective on the African style of play, reconstructs historic footballing events and above all shows the strength of a continent that is on the way to one of the high points in its history.

Title: Architecture from the Indonesian Past
Sub-title: Life and work of Fermont-Cuypers 1927-1957
By (author): Obbe H Norbruis
ISBN10-13: 9460220150 : 9789460220159
Things are changing and we are changing with it, was their motto. Since 1927 uprising broke out against the Dutch in the colony, the crisis followed. They continued to design stoically at Fermont-Cuypers; schools, churches, villas and offices. All buildings on which the Dutch flag fluttered. Nationalism played worldwide. At the end of the 1930s, the crisis was over for them too, they designed, hospitals, head offices, hotels, and even a passenger terminal in Tanjung Priok. The busy season will soon start again, many tourists are expected, wrote the newspapers shortly before the German invasion of the Netherlands. Everything changed because of the war in the archipelago. After Indonesian independence, the firm had a restart until 1958. Their buildings still exist in Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, Bandung and many other cities. Indonesia is proud of it. This book tells the story of a productive architecture firm, unique buildings and the people behind them. This is the English revised edition of the book Architectuur met vlag en wimpel.

Title: Bird Wildlife of Aruba
By (author): Greg Peterson
ISBN10-13: 9460223737 : 9789460223730
Birds are fascinating creatures. They are descendants of dinosaurs and connect us to the far gone past. Like bees and bats, birds play a significant role in natures evolutionary clockwork. They pollinate flowers and spread seeds. They help keep insect populations in balance. The state of affairs of our birds is an indicator for the state of affairs of nature as a whole and so they also connect us to our future. Archaeological findings of bird-like remains date back some 150 million years and evidence demonstrates that the bird wildlife of Aruba predates any humans first steps on the island. Natural phosphate was found in the nineteenth century which originated from sea bird droppings. Over half a million tons of phosphate were exploited. Such commercial quantities can only come about in areas where large numbers of birds congregated over many years. Terns and gulls have been using Aruba as a nesting site for thousands of years. The variety of our bird species is fascinating. Some endure our times of drought; while others have difficulty doing without our waterholes. The nest of our Shoco is in the ground while the Prikichi breeds in termite nests in trees. Our Brown Pelican has a wingspan of up to 2 meters, while our Blue-tailed Emerald has a body length of only 8 centimetres. We have simple coloured birds and we have our Dornasol, our Ruby-topaz Hummingbird; a true magician of ever-changing sparkling colours. Arubas terns breed by the thousands, close to one another while our female Blue-tailed Emerald takes care of her chicks alone, in a nest she has hidden from anyones sight. Our Patrishi or Crested Bobwhite walks around slowly while feeding and our Peregrine Falcon hunts at phenomenal speeds. Some of our birds are carnivores, others are vegetarians. Some hunt in our skies, some in our trees and some even under water. Some are quiet; others are true musicians. And so we can go on. It is this variety that makes our islands bird wildlife so fascinating. Just: Imagine Aruba!

Title: Bolivia -- The Strength of Political Courage
Sub-title: 35 Years of CIPCA History
By (author): Vera Gianotten
ISBN10-13: 9460220967 : 9789460220968
Between 1970 and 2005, Bolivia lived through military coups, democracy and dictatorship. It suffered discontinuity, erratic political change, peasant and indigenous upheavals. It is in this context that we find the continuity of non-governmental organisations like CIPCA (Centre for Research and Promotion of the Peasantry), which contributed, among other actors, to the dawning, in 2006, of a new political era in which people who had been excluded since colonial times reached positions of formal State power. The primary aim of this book is to present the history of one particular NGO as part of the history of the social movements and the NGOs in Bolivia (and Latin America). Between 1970 and 1985 CIPCA carried out its rural development activities in an informal setting of a group of friends and against a background of military dictatorships, with the main objective of restoring the validity of democratic institutions. Once democracy was restored, in 1982, and CIPCA had become a formal institution, it had to adjust its objectives. Between 1985 and 2006 activities were carried out in an atmosphere of political democracy, in which economic exclusion of the peasantry and the indigenous population was nonetheless still present. This books systematisation of 35 years of (CIPCA) history offers the reader a reference that might serve to deepen reflections on rural development themes that are still matters of debate today.

Title: Can We Make a Difference?
Sub-title: Museums, Society & Development in North & South
Edited by: Paul Voogt
ISBN10-13: 906832747X : 9789068327472
Ten upcoming young museum professionals from around the world gathered in the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) in Amsterdam to discuss the 'crisis of the ethnographic museum'. What is the relevance of these former colonial museums in todays society? Can they make a difference? The ten papers presented show that they still do. In every part of the world individuals and institutions are trying to find innovative ways to make heritage of the past relevant for the present. From culture banks in Africa to museum cooperatives in Asia and collection libraries in Europe -- the different case-studies show that the ethnographic museum has a bright future, in North and South, as long as we do not cling to the term 'ethnographic' or the term 'museum'. The conference Museums, Society & Development and this publication were produced by KIT as part of the EU-funded Culture and Development programme that was carried out by CulturCooperation e.V. (Hamburg, Germany) between 2005 and 2008.

Title: Capacity-Building for Knowledge Generation
Sub-title: Experiences in the Context of Health & Development
Edited by: Anke Kwaak, Hermen Ormel, Annemiek Richter
ISBN10-13: 9460220533 : 9789460220531
Capacity-building is key to sustainable development efforts and over the past decades has also enjoyed considerable attention in the field of health and development. However, perspectives on what capacity-building (or capacity development) means, what it intends to achieve and which strategies are most effective differ, depending on the context and the perspectives of a variety of stakeholders. This book aims to contribute to conceptual reflection and to share experiences regarding a range of capacity development approaches in different contexts that have in common that they are situated outside formal lecture hall settings and intend to contribute to knowledge generation. In Capacity-building for knowledge generation: Experiences in the context of health and development, professionals and scholars reflect on different strategies for capacity-building, ranging from empowerment, writeshops and strengthening of research capacity to stakeholder analysis, knowledge management and mind mapping. Prior to this, capacity-building related concepts and definitions and a framework for interpreting the various experiences are presented. The book contains seven chapters, each of which presents one of more cases of action learning or capacity development. These cases have engaged the research and non-governmental communities in diverse settings in -- mostly -- Africa. All aimed to strengthen intellectual engagement and the culture of enquiry, as part of a "knowledge translation" process. This means that not only knowledge institutes and researchers participated but also problem owners, policymakers, practitioners, advocates and other end-users of research. This book intends to cater to the demand for knowledge and ideas among these same groups.

Title: Capturing Museum Knowledge
Sub-title: A Twenty Year Evolution in Digitally Recording the Tropenmuseum Collection
By (author): Marjolein Beumer
ISBN10-13: 9068327496 : 9789068327496
It makes sense for institutions to digitally register their collections or company information. The possibilities and applications seem endless. Office automation has been introduced in almost all museums in the Netherlands. However, some Dutch museums have not yet formulated an information policy or reserved a separate budget for ICT. ICT is still insufficiently integrated in Dutch museums as a policy. This publication describes how, in the course of twenty years, the Tropenmuseum has developed from a completely analogue institution to a museum where digitisation is central and forms part of all work processes. All the ups and downs of twenty years of automation and digitisation of the Tropenmuseum collections are described here. This publication can be used by heritage institutions as a case study in the field of digitisation of collections and possibly offer useful ideas for their own digitisation process.

Title: Chain Empowerment
Sub-title: Supporting African Farmers to Develop Markets
By (author): Royal Tropical Institute
ISBN10-13: 9460220916 : 9789460220913
This is a book of hope for Africa's smallholder farmers. It shows how they can earn more from their crops and livestock by taking control over the value chains they are part of -- chains that link them with consumers in Africa's towns and cities, as well as in other countries. The book is written in easy-to-understand language and is richly illustrated with line drawings. The book describes two basic strategies that groups of farmers can use to improve their incomes: vertical and horizontal integration. Vertical integration means taking on additional activities in the value chain: processing or grading produce, for example. Horizontal integration means becoming more involved in managing the value chain itself -- by farmers' improving their access to and management of information, their knowledge of the market, their control over contracts, or their co-operation with other actors in the chain. This book contains 19 case studies showing how groups of farmers throughout Africa have adopted one or both of these strategies to improve their incomes. It shows how development organisations have helped them do this -- how they have succeeded, and how they have sometimes failed. It shows the need to invest in improving the quality of existing products, developing new products, establishing market linkages, and building farmer organisation and capacity. The book provides numerous insights for those striving to empower smallholder farmers to develop markets. It will be of particular interest to government policymakers and staff involved in agricultural development, non-government organisations, university faculty and students, trainers, evaluators, and donors seeking ways to promote agriculture in Africa and elsewhere in the developing world.

Title: Common Goods in a Divided World
Edited by: Bernard Berendsen
ISBN10-13: 9460221645 : 9789460221644
"Common Goods in a Divided World", the title of the lecture series organised by the Netherlands Chapter of the Society for International Development (SID) and also the title of this publication underlines the necessity to safeguard common interests through institutional facilities and arrangements. The financial crisis has shown the disastrous shortcomings of supervision and regulation; international security has been undermined by fragile states; the structural reform of the United Nations did not come to much; the discussion of the adaptation of the Bretton Woods system is stagnating and non-Western nations should be given a greater role in the management of interdependence and international security. In this volume, international experts, scientists, politicians and activists give their views and recommendations on these issues.
