    Title: #Tumeke
    By (author): Michael Petherick
    ISBN10-13: 0994141572 : 9780994141576
Plans for the Newtoun communityâ s Waitangi Day celebrations are well under way. The Tape Orchestraâ s practising like mad. Monty and Mr Steve Vibrant are designing a poster. Rishiâ s trying to land Lil Yacht Shifty â ¦ and Ms Ropataâ s juggling it all because everyone wants in. Thereâ ll be curry and cake, kapa haka, halal sausages, foam blasters, the Naenae dirtman, and kiss-the-goat â if Constable Rutene can manage to chase one down. In the meantime, Dreadflockâ s considering a blog, Brionyâ s Mumâ s being a helicopter, and everyoneâ s eating a lot of lolly cake. In the boundary-riding tradition of the Annual project, Annual Inkâ s latest title #Tumeke! brings you the lives, loves and larrikin spirit of an inner-city neighbourhood. The story is told through texts, Instagram posts, emails, fliers, committee minutes, posters, diary entries, blog posts, chatrooms, school homework, raps and the reliably bonkers community noticeboard. Stuffed with big personalities, surprising friendships and a little intrigue, this multimedia story brims with creativity and comedy, and everyday heartaches, too. Debut novelist Michael Petherick juggles a large cast and multiple story threads with panache, giving us a window on a vivid, warm-hearted community. A narrative â but not quite as we know it â for middle readers and anyone who loves to connect.

Title: A Kind of Shelter Whakaruru-taha
Sub-title: An anthology of new writing for a changed world
Edited by: Witi Ihimaera, Michelle Elvy
    ISBN10-13: 1991016220 : 9781991016225
Sixty-eight writers and eight artists gather at a hui in a magnificent cave-like dwelling or meeting house. In the middle is a table, the tÄ pu kÅ rero, from which the rangatira speak; they converse with honoured guests, and their rangatira-kÅ rero embody the tÄ huhu, the over-arching horizontal ridge pole, of the shelter. In a series of rich conversations, those present discuss our world in the second decade of this century; they look at decolonisation, indigeneity, climate change . . . this is what they see. Edited by Witi Ihimaera and Michelle Elvy, this fresh, exciting anthology features poetry, short fiction and creative non-fiction, as well as kÅ rero or conversations between writers and work by local and international artists. The lineup from Aoteraoa includes, among others, Alison Wong, Paula Morris, Anne Salmond, Tina Makereti, Ben Brown, David Eggleton, Cilla McQueen, Hinemoana Baker, Erik Kennedy, Ian Wedde, Nina Mingya Powles, Gregory Oâ Brien, Vincent Oâ Sullivan, Patricia Grace, Selina Tusitala Marsh and Whiti Hereaka. Guest writers from overseas include Aparecida Vilaça, Jose-Luis Novo and Ru Freeman. Ihimaera and Elvy have curated a luminous hui, a book to return to time and again.

Title: A Seat at the Table
Sub-title: NZ and the United Nations Security Council, 2015-2016
Series: A Seat at the Table: NZ and the United Nations Security Council, 2015-2016
Edited by: Graham Hassall, Negar Partow
    ISBN10-13: 0995137803 : 9780995137806
This fascinating look at global politics follows New Zealandâ s fourth term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, from 2015 to 2016. Its engrossing chapters by key players, from the then Minister for Foreign Affairs Murray McCully to the two-term New Zealand President of the Security Council Gerard van Bohemen, offer real insights into the Councilâ s day-to-day workings. This book examines New Zealandâ s efforts to improve Council processes, and asks: Given the dominance of the P5 â the United States, China, Russia, France and the United Kingdomâ is there a role on the Security Council for smaller nations? And can they effect meaningful change for those suffering in war-torn and corrupt countries?

By (author): Brigitta Baker, Jo Willis
    ISBN10-13: 1991016107 : 9781991016102
To not know your family story is a huge loss of your sense of self. It has the potential to undermine your wellbeing and your relationships across a lifetime. Adopted is the powerful and honest account of two of the thousands of children affected by closed adoption in Aotearoa New Zealand, from 1950 to the mid-1970s. Jo Willis and Brigitta Baker both sought and found their respective birthparents at different stages of their lives and have become advocates for other adopted New Zealanders. They share the complexity of that journey, the emotional challenges they faced, and the ongoing impacts of their adoptions, with candour and courage. Closed adoption also exacts a physical and emotional toll on birthparents, partners and children. Their stories are also told in this compelling book.

Title: After Winter Comes the Summer
Sub-title: PÅ«hoi’s musical heritage in song, rhyme and dance
By (author): Roger Buckton, Judith Williams, Ralf Heimrath
    ISBN10-13: 1991309031 : 9781991309037
New Zealandâ s German-Bohemian settlers have played, sung and danced to the music, songs and rhymes documented in this treasury of folk music for over 150 years. Sung in their unique dialect and played with traditional instruments, this music is a link between New Zealand and Bohemia, now part of Czechoslovakia. To create this important book, the authors rebuilt the songs through interviews with descendants of the first settlers, research into European folk songs and transcriptions of recordings. They can be played on most instruments and are a thoroughly readable and singable resource for young and old. After Winter Comes the Summer also offers insights into the lives of the people of PÅ"hoi, and later Å haupÅ , both in their native country and in a new and unfamiliar land. It is a case study of a small colonial New Zealand village, its development and growth, its music and culture, and its relationships and links back to Bohemia.

    Title: Against the Odds
Sub-title: New Zealand's first women doctors
By (author): Cynthia Farquhar, Michaela Selway
    ISBN10-13: 1991016980 : 9781991016980
In 2025, the year in which the Otago medical school celebrates 150 years, 50 per cent of graduates are women. Back in 1891 when Emily Seideberg, who would go on to become the schoolâ s first woman graduate, applied for entrance it was not at all clear that it would be granted. There was active hostility in many quarters to the very idea that women could be doctors. This book traces the paths of the women who, between the 1880s and 1967 (when the Auckland medical school opened), battled indifference and chauvinism and, later, many of the other challenges that faced women in the professions, to become New Zealandâ s first women doctors. Their stories are often remarkable and the contribution to research, medical breakthroughs and improved patient care is to be honoured.
