The Department of Musicology at the University of Copenhagen and The Royal Library have decided to acknowledge the excellence of these two scholars by a double Festschrift, "A due". Both have been working at the Music Department of the University of Copenhagen and have collaborated with The Royal Library on various projects. This publication contains contributions from 44 colleagues, who thus -- in topics covering the period from the Middle Ages to the present day -- give their voice in the honouring of the two scholars for their musical scholarship. As it may be seen from the table of contents, the publication covers a broad range both in time and in topics, which are all included in the scholarly sphere of Bergsagel and Schwab. |

| Along with Hamlets Kronborg at Elsinore, Frederiksborg is the most magnificent early seventeenth-century residence in Northern Europe, visited by thousands of people from all over the world each year. Its splendid setting on three interconnected islands and the richness of its sculptural decoration is unparalleled. However, much of the structure and interior was devastated in a fire in 1859 and the large-scale damages necessitated substantial reconstruction. While the reconstruction is reasonably faithful to the original architecture, it was exceedingly lax when it came to the more than sixty freestanding sculptures that originally adorned the castles courtyards, galleries, arches and facades. This volume recreates an idea of how Frederiksborg presented itself to its visitors in the days of Christian IV. The book further unravels the profound inspiration Christian IV drew from his sojourns to Berlin, Dresden and, especially, to England, where in the summer of 1606 he visited his brother-in-law James I at Theobalds House. This visit provided inspiration that, even while construction of his residence in Denmark was in progress, would dramatically change the overall layout and facades of Frederiksborg, thereby turning the castle into the marvel that it remains to this day. In this pioneering study, featuring more than a hundred photos and illustrations, Patrick Kragelund etches out a new and important historical and architectural dimension to this magnificent monument. |

| This book is the first complete study of the painter Nicolai Abildgaard's oeuvre. Abildgaard (1743-1809) is the only Danish artist of the 18th century to obtain a position in the European art history of the period. His works range from the Pre-Romantic sublime to Enlightenment history painting, anonymous satire and Neo-Classical allegory. 1789 radicalised his views and estranged him from his royal patrons. | An anthropological study of play-acting. Acting on the stage is seen as an example of social action in general. The focus is on the playing of Shakespeare, and on the players' use of and reflections upon time, space, plot, and acting. Kirsten Hastrup aims at a renewed understanding of action and motivation within any social setting. By listening to such experts of action as the players of Shakespeare, we achieve a comprehensive reappraisal of current notions of human agency. In the process, we are offered a set of methodological tools and analytical concepts that may enrich future anthropological analysis of individual actions in their social context. The work is an unprecedented approach to action and acting. For anthropologists and other social or cultural scientists Hastrup offers a fresh perspective on performance, and on the construction of the analytical object. For theatre historians and dramatists, the combination of detailed (ethnographic) analysis of the players' work and self-understanding and anthropological argument offers new insight into the profession of acting. The recurrent references to Shakespeare's plays add a lively feel of art and poetry and sustain one of the main threads of investigation, namely the relationship between language and action. | The aim of the investigation is to throw light on the adoption institution. Much attention has been devoted to the contractual nature of the adoption which was carried out inter vivos as opposed to the unilateral nature of a testamentary adoption. In the present work it is argued that the main difference between the different types of adoption was one of procedure: adoption took place in public, in the adopter's phratry and deme, no matter whether prior to the death of the adopter or posthumously. It is also argued that it was the formal recognition of the adoptee by the adopter's phtatry and deme which constituted the adoption itself and its validity, legal as well as social. Further, the tomb cult, aspects of Athenian family-life and the Athenian legislation, which regulated it, are treated to the extent to which they have a direct influence on the Athenian institution of adoption. |

| This work retraces the various phases of the evolution of a small East Greenlandic society throughout the twentieth century and sums up its present-day transformations as a result of its contact with the western world. Discovered barely a century ago, the Ammassalik Eskimo ethnic group was in a way a "perfect" model of an isolate -- whether from a biological or a cultural point of view. It opened to the outside world, slowly before the Second World War, then consistently faster after the 1940's. This society of nomadic sea mammal hunters under-went a real demographic explosion, became sedentary, diversified its activities and lifestyles and is beginning to show some social stratification. Demographic analysis, on a genealogical basis, has been at the heart of this re-search on change; it allows us to appreciate transformations in the biological heritage, as well as in family organisation and social and economic structures. This approach draws attention to the existing interactions between the various phenomena which make up the life of a small society and determine its evolution. In conclusion, the contemporary history of some 2300 Ammassalimmiut of Ammassalik district is placed in the wider context of Greenland's accession to Home Rule (in 1979) and of the unifying movement initiated between three of the territories where the Inuit live today: Alaska, Canada and Greenland. |
