| Title: British Hit EPs |
| Sub-title: 1955-1989 |
| By (author): George R White |
| ISBN10-13: 0956267963 : 9780956267962 |
| Fully revised and expanded second edition of the only chart book dedicated to British Hit EPs. Originally conceived as sort-of 'mini LP', the four-track extended play album or 'EP' achieved mass popularity in the late 1950s and early 1960s, later enjoying a revival during the punk/new wave era of the mid-1970s. Attractively packaged in glossy colour sleeves and often containing rare material, EPs also rapidly acquired a following among discerning music fans and record collectors that continues to the present day. Includes a history of the format, an artist-by-artist listing of every 7-inch hit EP from 1955 to 1989 (with full track details for each record), a trivia section, the official UK EP charts week by week, and much more. Profusely illustrated with over 600 sleeve shots. |

"This lavishly-illustrated book fills a long-standing gap in the history of the British pop music charts. This is a pretty thorough work... with as much detail as you could wish for. If you must have everything about your particular favourite artist and he or she is in the book, this is a must." -- In Tune International

"George White's neat little book... offers lots of lists (and personally, as a self-confessed vinyl anorak, I love this sort of thing!) not to mention a host of facts and figures, as well as reproducing charts... Running to just over 250 pages and generously illustrated... this book offers good value for money and ought to give you many hours of pleasurable browsing, as well as being a useful adjunct to your collection." -- Now Dig This
|
|
"Discographies and label listings are usually characterised by either being dry as a bone or endlessly fascinating. It all depends on who's doing the compiling. George's approach to his subject maintained a very high level of my interest throughout. Herein you will find every conceivable musical – and non-musical – style from grand opera to punk, taking in Pinky & Perky en route. The information is presented in an extremely clear and easy-to-follow manner using an exceptionally readable typeface – a minor but often neglected point. There is much to interest anyone who has the slightest interest in UK chart history... an extremely useful reference work which also manages to be an absorbing read." -- Blues & Rhythm
|
|
"An excellent book... gloriously illustrated... attractive full colour cover. This publication easily surpasses the Guinness-published EP chapters in their 1984 Hits Of The 60s book, and is highly recommended to all 60's music fans/collectors and researchers alike." -- 60's Scene
|
|
"A chart reference book with a new angle... well researched, annotated and illustrated. Top marks all round." -- Record Collector

| Title: Brook Benton |
| Sub-title: There Goes That Song Again |
| By (author): Herwig Gradischnig, Hans Maitner |
| ISBN10-13: 095626798X : 9780956267986 |
| Brook Benton was a magnificent singer who could handle anything from blues, jazz and soul to country, pop and standards. His version of Tony Joe White's 'Rainy Night in Georgia' -- an international smash in 1970 -- remains a timeless classic. The biography by Herwig Gradischnig is based on an album of newspaper cuttings personally compiled by Benton. These contain his views on a wide variety of topics, as well as reviews of his work. Personal interviews conducted in the USA with members of Brook's family have also been included. A significant portion of the text is dedicated to detailed discussion of his recordings and analysis of his distinctive vocal style. The exhaustive discography compiled by Hans Maitner identifies over 660 known recordings by Brook Benton. In this, it far surpasses all others published to date, which generally account for only around 300. The book also contains many rare photographs made available to the authors by the late singer's family. The entire work was authorised by Brook's widow, Mary, and daughter Vanessa, both of whom were keen to see it published. |

“This is an impressively researched and constructed book which will afford endless pleasure to those who admire this artist. It will almost certainly send you, as it did me, to examine your collection of Benton's records, to play some Brook Benton music not heard for a long time and to check what you have and have not got from his discography. Searching the internet proved rather frustrating - those post 1962 Mercury albums are elusive, his Cotillion recordings are not all available and bits and pieces of his later work are poorly represented. And it turns out, I think I have a remake, not the original of A RAINY NIGHT IN GEORGIA! It would be nice to think that this book will lead to an upsurge of interest in a singer who now seems sadly neglected. Whether or not it does, his fans will no doubt be delighted with this impressive and fact-filled volume, packed with photos, memorabilia and easy to follow information. Well recommended.” - In Tune International, July 2015

“
this serious work of affection goes a long way to arguing that his vocal prowess and way with a tune means he should now be seen on the same par as the greats - like say Sam Cooke
American columnist Dick Kleiner said of Brook Benton's deep affecting tone - "...He has a rich soft voice and a way of using it that makes a sound like a breeze though a field of cello strings..." After reading this wonderful book – I'm inclined to think he was so much more. An absolute must own for fans and a great read for the curious. Well done to all involved...” - Mark Barry, "Sounds Good, Looks Good" and "Mark Barry's Books On Music".

| Title: Chuck Berry International Directory |
| Sub-title: Volume III |
| By (author): Morten Reff |

| The third of four volumes in this extensive reference work dedicated to rock'n'roll's most influential guitarist and composer. “The crusade by Morten Reff (indefatigable Norwegian collector, writer and Berry authority), to set in stone for posterity just about every known fact about Chuck Berry’s musical career, continues apace. Although the first two volumes could be bought as stand-alone books, they were presented as the first thousand pages and nineteen chapters of the overall monograph. This third volume now adds, in one single ‘Chapter 20’, a listing of worldwide cover versions of The Brown-Eyed Handsome Man’s records which its further 600-plus pages struggles to contain! Despite, unsurprisingly, finding no obvious omissions, I still kept on dipping-in and re-visiting and will doubtless continue to do so, which is the main attraction of any book like this. Presentation follows that of the preceding volumes, in the usual attractive Music Mentor format and including around 250 label and cover shots, itself an area of fascination for many.” Brian Smth

| Sub-title: Volume II |
| By (author): Morten Reff |
| ISBN10-13: 0954706870 : 9780954706876 |
| The second of four volumes in this extensive reference work dedicated to rock'n'roll's most influential guitarist and composer, Chuck Berry. Contains details of bootlegs; radio albums; movies; TV shows; video and DVD releases; international tour itineraries; hits, achievements and awards; Berry's songs, roots, and influence on other artists; tributes; Chuck Berry in print; fan clubs and websites; plus annotated discographies of pianist Johnnie Johnson (post-Berry) and the ultimate Berry copyist, Eddy Clearwater. |

"I reviewed Volume 1 in JB 66 and I did warn you that there was more to come. Here is Volume 2, and the signs of a magnificent obsession are now apparent. After a short section on bootlegs, we have a vast, array of Chuck Berry lists: 'On the Radio', 'On TV', 'In the Movies', 'On Video & DVD', 'In Print'. There is a whole section of international (ie: non-U.S.) tour dates, proving what a compulsive list-maker Mr Reff is. Chuck's frequent touring has, it seems, only been interrupted by recording sessions and 'unfortunate jail sentences'. There's no mention of the fact that Chuck's appearances have not always given value for money. Several sections deal with the songs -- his own, as well as his cover versions and songs that influenced him. There is a fascinating chapter on Tribute Songs, which not only includes Robert 'Bilbo' Walker's "Berry Pickin" (with front and insert shots from the Rooster CD), but also such classics as Gilberto Gil's 'Chuck Berry Fields Forever' and Yukon Fudge's ambiguous 'He Can't Play Just Like Chuck Berry'. Of serious interest for blues lovers are two extensive chapters, one devoted to Berry's keyboard man Johnnie Johnson and the other to Berry-devotee Eddy Clearwater. Both get a worthwhile treatment, covering their solo releases (including video and DVD) and very detailed sessionographies. I cannot comment on how comprehensive these are, but there is one heck of a lot of information here. In fact, there is more information in this book than anyone but the most worshipful of Berry disciples could possibly wish for, or indeed, cope with. And there aren't quite so many illustrations in this volume, although those present are never less than Interesting. One small point of pedantry: the author has a habit of spelling the word 'good' as 'goode' -- is that an error or a deliberate hit of linguistic affectation?" -- Alan Empson, Juke Blues 67, Spring/Summer 2009
|
|
"As with the previous volume, it is illustrated throughout with masses of photos, labels and book. LP and CD covers, and the whole job is just as jaw-dropping s the first, still keeping the interest going despite the many pages of mere lists." -- Blues & Rhythm March 2009

"I have hardly put the book down since I got it. Just how far you go with succeeding volumes will depend on your personal level of interest in such esoterica - but I defy anyone remotely interested in Berry, or even rock ‘n roll discography, not to be swept along by this first slab." -- Blues & Rhythm April 2009

| Title: Cook's Tours |
| Sub-title: Tales of a Tour Manager |
| By (author): Malcolm Cook |
| ISBN10-13: 0956267947 : 9780956267948 |
| Throughout his 44 years in the entertainment industry, Malcolm Cook met and worked with some of the biggest names in show business -- Eden Kane, Cilla Black, Billy Fury, Tom Jones, Gene Pitney, Del Shannon, Gerry & The Pacemakers, P.J. Proby, the Kinks, Glen Campbell, Roger Whittaker, Rudolf Nureyev, Alvin Stardust, Bad Manners, Canned Heat, the Ronettes, Kris Kristofferson, Tammy Wynette . . . the list goes on and on. In this humorous, fast-paced biographical account, Cook lifts the lid on what it takes to keep a show on the road and artists and audiences happy. It's all here: transport problems, unscrupulous promoters, run-ins with East German police, hassles with the Mafia, tea with the Duke of Norfolk, the wind-ups, the laughter, the heartbreak and the tears. Along the way, the author also includes vignettes of some of the prime movers and shakers of British showbiz including Brian Epstein, Arthur Howes, Hal Carter and Michael Levy to round off this unique insight into what really goes on behind the scenes. |

"The author is someone I have known since my teen years, and he has had a long and successful career shepherding flocks of rock-and-roll performers, singers, musicians and ballet dancers through the ordeals of touring, here in the UK and overseas. Hearing that he had a book coming out, I knew that I would have to buy it, of course - but, equally of course, I knew that you buy your friends' books out of a desire to encourage and support them, but frankly it sometimes turns out to be a waste of money. In this case, I could not have been more wrong! Malcolm Cook has created a really 'good read' that kept me turning the pages, sometimes laughing aloud at the antics of the artistes and the reactions of various Jacks-in-Office - always good for a chuckle, that lot! It certainly brought back a lot of memories for me."

"Over my thirty plus years of broadcasting I've had the pleasure and privilege in may cases of talking and meeting some of the greats from the world of music. Many of the interviews are made available through press contacts, publicists, managers and one of the most important when artists are playing venues up and down the country would be the tour manager. Believe it or not, but his job is one of the most demanding you could ever come across. One of the best tour managers I've ever worked with is Malcolm Cook. (This is) a no punches pulled account of a lifetime spent travelling with some of the great artists of our time and a book that will 'entertain' you from start to finish. Not surprisingly he also gets a few things off his chest as to the 'good to work with' and as he describes them the 'pain in the butt' artists. Worth every penny of its £18.99 price tag."

"A regular contributor to The Beat in the past, Malcolm Cook often linked current events with recollections from his life as tour manager to the biggest names in pop music, always promising/threatening to publish his complete memoirs one day. That day has now arrived and 'Cook's Tours' details a fascinating journey from the early 60s into the New Millennium, looking behind the scenes on package tours, I had enjoyed from the front stalls. Working with a variety of artists, from Eden Kane and Gerry & The Pacemakers, to Motown's premier acts, Gene Pitney, Glen Campbell, and even Rudolph Nureyev, Cook experienced life at all levels, from dodgy B&Bs, roadside cafes, and uninsured bangers to luxury limousines, five-star hotels and restaurants worldwide. Every act has a different tale to tell, and each one is told in a manner that conveys the pleasure he derived from his life. Each chapter details an artist, or genre, often confirming the likeable character behind the mike was genuine, but also features a number who were very different. Interspersed throughout the memories, Cook recalls many of the sexual encounters he experienced along the way, and other perks of the job! A thoroughly enjoyable read, exactly how I imagined the finished publication would be. Well done, Malcolm!" - Jim Stewart. Beat Magazine, Feb 2012

“Remember all the hoo-ha in the papers back in the Sixties when pop star PJ Proby split his trousers on stage? Malcolm Cook does. He was watching from the side of the stage. What happened when a former member of Telstar group The Tornados did his trademark leap on to a grand piano ... only to discover that the lid had been removed? Malcolm can tell you. Or rather, you can find all the answers in Cook's Tours, Malcolm's newly-published and often hilarious book of memoirs of his 44 years in the music and entertainment business.” - Eastern Daily Press March 2012
|
|
“I urge you to read this book not only to thoroughly enjoy, but to be envious of his amazing life with the stars, the super-stars and those who imagine they really should be stars, and to totally admire his literary skill in telling us all about it... It really is a gem of a read!” - Jim Kennedy Encore magazine April 2012
|
|
"This enthralling read is decorated with many photos & has seperate indexes for names, song titles & films/shows. It is therefore easy to find the brief mention of a Marvin, Welch & Farrar tour with the Supremes & Labi Siffre, & the final Jet Harris & Tony Meehan tour on a bill with Gerry & the Pacemakers & Del Shannon. This compartmentalisation means that it is very easy to read in small bites of a chapter or two at a time" - Alan Taylor, Pipeline Instrumental Review Spring 2012

| Title: First Time We Met the Blues |
| Sub-title: A Journey of Discovery with Jimmy Page, Brian Jones, Mick Jagger & Keith Richards |
| By (author): David Williams |
| ISBN10-13: 0954706811 : 9780954706814 |
| David Williams grew up in Epsom, Surrey and was a childhood friend of future Led Zeppelin guitar legend, Jimmy Page. Together they discovered what was for them an intriguing and very different kind of music: the blues. As their interest grew into a passion, they befriended other teenage enthusiasts -- among them Brian Jones, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards -- becoming part of a movement that ultimately brought about the '60s rock revolution. Part-biography, part-history, "The First Time We Met The Blues" is packed full of great anecdotes and unique insights into the early British blues scene, Page's formative years as a musician, the beginnings of the Rolling Stones, and much more besides. It culminates with a detailed account of a momentous expedition by van from London to Manchester to see the American Folk-Blues Festival in October 1962 -- the first time ever that Williams and his friends had an opportunity to see legendary American bluesmen like T-Bone Walker, Willie Dixon and John Lee Hooker in action -- and an assessment of its far-reaching aftermath. |

| Title: Hits That Missed |
| Sub-title: The UK Bubbling Under Chart 1954-1961 |
| By (author): Colin Driscoll |
| ISBN10-13: 0956267998 : 9780956267993 |
| The 1950s and early '60s were a period of unprecedented change on the British music scene, witnessing the emergence of trad jazz, skiffle, folk and rock'n'roll, a renaissance of Irish and Scottish music, and a gradual fading of the influence of operatic balladeers, crooners and the big band sounds of the post-war years. The market was awash with great records, many of which sold well but failed to get into the charts. Until now, there has been no way of knowing which records these were, or how close they came to becoming hits. This unique book documents for the first time anywhere all those singles and albums that 'bubbled under' the UK hit parade between June 1954 and March 1961. As no Bubbling Under chart was ever published in the UK, the author has specially compiled one from record dealers' returns of the time. As an added bonus, the pre-chart histories of hit records are also included. A goldmine of information, it is sure to be an invaluable resource for music fans, record collectors, researchers and historians for years to come. |
