Title: Adult Education in Great Britain, Norway & Spain
Sub-title: A Comparative Study of Participation, Motivation & Barriers
Edited by: Einar F Skaalvik, Liv Finbak
ISBN10-13: 8251916690 : 9788251916691
The rapid development and the increased competition in the labor market make continuing education a necessity for an increasing number of people. Equal opportunities for adults to engage in education are therefore important in order to combat exclusion from the labor market. To increase the provision of equality in opportunity for engagement in education we need to understand the psychological processes involved in participation in education. This report presents results from a European Commission Leonardo da Vinci-supported study of adult education in Great Britain, Norway, and Spain. The purpose of the project was, in a comparative perspective, to analyze psychological processes involved in participation and non-participation in adult education. The study focuses on the scale of participation, both in general and in different types of courses: which groups of adults participate the most, motivational aspects of participation, barriers to learning, conceptions of learning, and perceived benefits of adult education.

Title: Auf den Spuren der Pilger nach Trondheim / On the Pilgrim Way to Trondheim
Edited by: Stein Thue
ISBN10-13: 8251923050 : 9788251923057
Text in German. The Pilgrim Way Project was launched in 1994 when the Ministry of the Environment instructed the Directorate for Nature Management and The Directorate of Cultural Heritage to reconstruct the walk along the old roads to Nidaros (the former name of Trondheim). The work to reopen the old roads has been carried out in close co-operation with the 29 municipalities through which the Pilgrim Way winds. A steady stream of pilgrims flocked to Saint Olav's shrine in Nidaros Cathedral, from around 1050 until 1537, the time of the Reformation. Now, almost 500 years after the introduction of Protestantism saw the end of the pilgrimages, people are again encouraged to wander in the tracks of the pilgrims. The intention of this text is to stimulate interest in an important part of Norwegian history, to encourage outdoor activities and to let people share cultural experiences.

Title: Barents Sea
Sub-title: Ecosystem, Resources, Management -- Half a Century of Russian/Norwegian Cooperation
Edited by: Tore Jakobsen, Vladimir K Ozhigin
ISBN10-13: 8251925452 : 9788251925457
The joint management of Norway and Russia in the Barents Sea has been successful in conserving the living marine resources and is a major factor contributing to the present rich fisheries in the area. The basis for this conservation success is scientific research, which, to a large extent, has been conducted through a long-lasting co-operation between Russian and Norwegian scientists that has expanded greatly over the past half century. Based on joint Russian-Norwegian authorships, this monumental book celebrates the scientific co-operation by reflecting on the historical development and the scientific methods applied, and by offering a comprehensive presentation of the vast knowledge of the Barents Sea resources and ecosystem obtained through these co-operative efforts.

Title: Chinese Matters
Sub-title: From Grammar to First and Second Language Acquisition
By (author): Chris Wilder, Tor A Ã farli
ISBN10-13: 8251925363 : 9788251925365
This book addresses topics in Chinese grammar and the acquisition of Chinese as a first and second language. The studies presented share a common framework and comparative perspective. Changing global perspectives bring new language contacts into focus, and the Chinese-Norwegian connection figures prominently among the contributions, which include investigations of Chinese-Norwegian bilingual children and Norwegian-speaking L2 learners of Chinese.

Title: Controlling the Uncontrollable?
Sub-title: The Great Powers in the Middle East
Edited by: Tore T Petersen
ISBN10-13: 8251921902 : 9788251921909
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology hosted a conference on the Anglo-American Middle East in Trondheim 2 to 4 May 2005. A distinguished group of scholars accepted our invitations and gracefully agreed to rewrite their lectures for inclusion in this book. They also easily transcended the, perhaps, narrow theme of the conference, making their papers a sophisticated discussion, by and large, how the different great powers have, not always successfully, tried to control the Middle East. Hence the title of this book, 'Controlling the Uncontrollable'. Edward Ingram compares with a grand sweep the British and the American imperial experience in the Middle East, he notes that too many scholars exaggerate the power of nineteenth-century Great Britain in order to compare it with the present day 'US paramountcy'. Alan Milward is on a different tack, explaining how the oil crisis and oil embargo forced the European Common Market to take a new approach towards the Arabs, in the process cutting loose from the American embrace and laying the foundation for a common EU foreign policy. In his article, Douglas Little deepens our understanding of his concept American Orientalism -- the tendency to dismiss Muslims as backward, decadent and evil -- ending his essay with a withering criticism of George W Bush who has rejected the doctrine of containment in favour of preventive war when invading Iraq, needlessly creating the current imbroglio there. Peter Hahn discusses American-Israeli relations in the period 1945-1961, showing that Israeli and American officials were often at loggerheads on the future of the Jewish state. Rounding off the essays is Mary Ann Heiss' account of key episodes of American oil policy since 1945. Even with the importance of oil, as Heiss explains, the balance of power had by 1974 shifted in favour of the oil producers; that had 'shrewdly divided the Atlantic Alliance, pitting the Western Europeans against both the Americans and each other'.

Title: Design Guidelines for a Monitoring Environment Concerning Distributed Real-Time Systems
By (author): Aida Omerovic
ISBN10-13: 8251919312 : 9788251919319
While the dependability requirements of distributed real-time systems are expanding, there is currently no framework for defining and mapping these requirements into the system design and operation. A method of controlling and achieving the dependability level is real-time monitoring, which measures the degree of requirements fulfilment, relates it to the pre-defined, measurable system-level expectations and dynamically adapts the system, based on quality metrics, risk analysis, cost evaluation, control theory, neural networks, data acquisition and system knowledge management. The book deduces a framework to reveal, define, quantify, measure, analyse, design, implement, test, monitor and enhance dependability (functional and non-functional) requirements of a distributed system with real-time constraints. It is presented how the framework can be applied throughout all life-cycle stages, under varying constraints and with maximised cost effectiveness. An overview of the tools and methodologies applicable has been given and an integrated and generalised architecture for ensuring continuous fulfilment of system requirements, proposed. The framework provides a multilevel specification mechanism to establish the preservation of system requirements. This ensures the correct functioning of system through adaptations at run time. Among the benefits are controlled access and coordinated resource sharing in accordance with service-level agreement policies, multi-stakeholder interest preservation, transparency with respect to location, naming, performance etc., achievement of quality of service on demand, decentralisation, seamless integration of resources and applications, as well as increased predictability. READERSHIP: The intended audience is broad: real time and distributed systems scientists and developers, software engineers, students, quality assurance managers, contractors, users, service providers and all those searching for an alternative approach to handling and ensuring automated control of fulfilment of system requirements. Moreover, those needing a handbook on contract negotiations and a method of tracing operational results back into system requirements of long lived projects with high dependability and integrity demands.

Text in Norwegian. In this book several archaeologists and historians discuss the cathedral of Nidaros in Norse and European context -- its political, cultural and general impact on society in the centuries after 1153. Special emphasis is placed on the different relations between centre and periphery inside the province of Nidaros, and between Nidaros and the Church leadership in Rome.
