Title: (De)forming the Modernist Canon: Joseph Conrad and English Literary Modernism
By (author): Taner Can
ISBN10-13: 3955380092 : 9783955380090
Taner Can explores the prevailing problems of literary periodisation and canon formation in the history of English literary modernism. In his comprehensive survey of the development of modernist literary studies, he demonstrates that the current conception of English literary modernism and its established historical accounts are largely dominated by the exclusionary aesthetic perspective and restrictive critical assumptions that the early modernist writers deployed to define their art. Can seeks to redress this negative and marginalising historiography of modernism through a reassessment of Joseph Conradâ s literary career and achievements.

Title: Automatic Signature Verification using Segmentation
By (author): Asraful Haque
ISBN10-13: 3955380076 : 9783955380076
Asraful Haque presents a new offline signature verification technique based on dividing the signature image into blocks. Every block is represented by a set of features like number of pixels in each block, block-center and distance from the image center. Each feature type has a different impact for assigning a certain weight to a block. The system is easy to implement since its requirements are very feasible. In the last few decades, many approaches have been developed to verify off-line signatures automatically. Unfortunately, these concepts are under-utilized as they do not achieve a good classi?cation accuracy that is acceptable in real life applications. Haqueâ s method has the potential to become a framework for a fast and accurate automatic signature verification system. Dynamic properties of this verification system make it more powerful and secure, because no single attribute of the verifiers is fixed. Center of the image and tolerance level in distance varies from image to image. Experimental results show that the method eliminates random and simple forgeries and reduces skilled forgery to a great extent. The new technique is useful for any organization like a bank where a large amount of signatures has to be verified manually. The accuracy of the system is 92.92% which is quite better than any existing system. According to Haque, there is still room for future modification in this technique. The book is especially useful for students or researchers interested in pattern recognition.

Title: Burlesquing Hamlet: Cultural Exchange and Appropriation in the Victorian Age
Sub-title: Gunaydin Albay, Neslihan
By (author): Neslihan Gunaydin Albay
ISBN10-13: 3955380343 : 9783955380342
This study analyzes several burlesques to examine how such social and political comment takes place through a form of dialog in which the burlesque engages with the cultural claims of serious revivals of Shakespeare. It concentrates on how burlesque dramasâ treatment of Shakespearean plays reflects key attitudes and tensions in Victorian society, highlighting these through the incongruities between Shakespeare as known to their audience and as presented in the plays. The theatrical burlesques composed in the Victorian age adapt Shakespeare to address the habits, tastes, cultural and social values and preoccupations of their audiences. Hence, issues of social class, gender, race, political topicality, and the social status of the playsâ addressees, are addressed. The changes and tensions in Victorian drama through burlesques are central to an understanding of nineteenth-century popular culture and society. By focusing on concepts of high and low culture in Shakespearean burlesques, both externally and internally, this study takes a distinctive angle which integrates literary analysis with study of audience and cultural reception to provide a better understanding of the cultural significance of these humorous satiric plays.

Title: Cultural Struggle for Hegemony
Sub-title: PEGIDA in a Civil Society Perspective
By (author): Marian Pradella
ISBN10-13: 3955380254 : 9783955380250
The PEGIDA movement is the largest right-wing civil society phenomenon in recent German history. During its peak, the movement attracted up to 25.000 people at demonstrations in Dresden and other cities. In his study, Marian Sven Pradella identifies the ways in which PEGIDA was able to unite heterogeneous social actors and how the movement was able to exert massive influence on the German political sentiment. Methodologically, he applies the socio-cultural theories of Jeffrey C. Alexander and Ernesto Laclau / Chantal Mouffe. Pradella offers a new explanatory approach going beyond simply considering PEGIDA a 'political problem'. Instead, he unfolds the political background structures behind the movement and also reveals theoretical problems one faces when combining Alexander and Laclau/Mouffe.

Title: Ethics and Virtue
By (author): Catarina Belo
ISBN10-13: 3955380416 : 9783955380410
In her new book, Catarina Belo explores central issues pertaining to virtue ethics from both a classical and a contemporary perspective. She examines classical theories of virtue as developed by Aristotle, Aquinas, and Shaftesbury, while highlighting central topics within ethical theory and virtue ethics, such as voluntariness, the notion of the good, happiness, and the need to understand human nature and the emotions in developing an ethical theory. Written as a dialogue between a student and a teacher, following the structure and some of the themes of a previous dialogue, Spirit in Philosophy: A Metaphysical Inquiry (Stuttgart, WiSa, 2019), this work also aims to reconcile the notions of virtue and duty.

Title: Future Machine-to-Machine Communications
Sub-title: LTE-A Optimization for M2M Applications
By (author): Safdar Nawaz Khan Marwat
ISBN10-13: 3955380300 : 9783955380304
This book is the essence of a scientific research endeavor aspired to tackle the challenges of ever-growing data traffic in mobile networks. The contemporary mobile communication systems offer efficient services to broadband applications. However, narrowband Machine-to-Machine (M2M) data traffic handling remains still a concern. This book advocates a set of protocols for aggregation and multiplexing of M2M data traffic at an intermediate node before transmission to the core network. The devised framework is realized by two independent methods: the simulation approach and the analytical approach. The outcomes obtained through both methods are compared to validate the results. The statistical significance of simulation results is established by the determination of confidence intervals. The findings suggest significant improvements in radio resource utilization when serving M2M traffic.

Title: God, Subjectivity and the Self: A Comparative Study between Levinas and Kierkegaard
By (author): Stavros Panayiotu
ISBN10-13: 3955380424 : 9783955380427
Levinas's ethical phenomenology proposes, as it is discussed in the main body of this study, biblical and not experimental evidence to discuss subjectivity, which can be justified only by prioritizing the Other and not the Self. Levinas vehemently provides his opposition to the total enforcement of the I. It is the Other who always comes first. There is an intersubjective dissymmetry and that is mistakenly avoided in analytical philosophy. Where the analytic line of thought provides autonomy, Levinas speaks about heteronomy, and where the former insists on totality of the self, Levinas provides vulnerability and accountability. Only a vulnerable I can love his neighbour and care for him/her. For Levinas, what matters at all is not the priority of the I in relation to the other, but the priority of the other in relation to me. Such a relationship does not suppose any absorption. And for Levinas we should dramatically reverse the traditional hierarchy where the self takes precedence over the other by introducing the idea of the infinite beyond the subject and the world. On his own turn, Kierkegaard suggests the human journey begins from the aesthetical temptations, then, elevates the individual to the common ethical norms, and finally arrives to the personal faith in God. Kierkegaard unpacks his own philosophical thought about subjectivity that is not too far from Levinasâ s proposal about Selfhood because Kierkegaard asserts that we ought to be moral persons. However, this morality does not depend on others but on us. Moreover, according to Kierkegaard, Godâ s approach to the Other is love, but love also is a way of myself to reach the Other and that implies a direct relation between me and God through an honest pray.

Title: Heating and Evaporation of Multi-Component Fuel Droplets.
By (author): Mansour Al Qubeissi
ISBN10-13: 3955380238 : 9783955380236
This book documents pioneering mathematical models introduced for the simulation of multi-component droplets heating and evaporation processes which are implementable into commercial CFD codes. These models, described as ´multi-dimensional quasi discrete` (MDQD) and ´discrete-component` models, were applied to automotive fuel droplets in experimentally measured internal combustion engine conditions for biodiesel, diesel, and gasoline fuels. For instance, it is shown that the suggested models lead to accurate predictions of temperatures and evaporation times in typical diesel and gasoline engine conditions. Such models have also reduced CPU time about 85% compared with cases when classical approaches are used.

Title: Identity in Progress
Sub-title: Tracing the Processes of Value Construction in Kazuo Ishiguro’s Fiction
By (author): Cihan Yazgı
ISBN10-13: 3955380289 : 9783955380281
Why do we believe what we believe in? Where are the values that we take for granted in constructing our identity coming from? Do we know how we came to be the person that is us? Identity in Progress is a book that tries to trace the value construction processes by way of analysing Nobel Prize-winning British author Kazuo Ishiguroâ s two top novels The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go. The former shows an old butler now sceptical about his unshakeable loyalty to whatever he once believed to constitute â dignity;â the latter shows a young woman on a journey, both literally and metaphorically, to find out who or what she is. With Fredric Jamesonâ s words on â the propaedeutic value of artâ in mind, Identity in Progress provides a refreshing reading of the two novels with a Marxist perspective, revealing, as Jameson says, the historical and social essence of what we believe to be individual experiences.
